CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team earned a spot on the 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award list, while nine Wolverines were named to the organization's Division I National Academic Squad, the NFHCA announced this week.
Michigan was named to the National Academic Team after achieving a minimum grade-point average of 3.30 during the fall semester of the 2018-19 academic year. Michigan was one of 76 schools in Division I to earn this honor; all nine Big Ten Conference programs were included on the list.
The National Academic Squad program honors student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year. Michigan's honorees include seniors Maggie Bettez and Marleise Emrhein; juniors Clare Brush and Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort; sophomores Maya Gompper, Kragen Metz and Emma Tamer; and freshmen Kathryn Peterson and Anna Spieker.
Emrhein, an education major, was named to the team for the fourth time in her career, becoming the ninth Wolverine to be named at least four times to the team (Eileen Brandes, Mary Fox, Sammy Gray, Nicole Lonsway, Lauren MacMillan, Molly Maloney, Chris Lueb, Eliza Stein, Morgan Malone), while Bettez and Brush each earned the distinction for the third time in her career.
Michigan has placed at least five individuals on the national academic team in each of the last 10 seasons. Twelve Wolverines previously were honored this year with Academic All-Big Ten distinction.
The Wolverines finished the 2018 season with a 14-7 record, including a perfect 9-0 home record at Phyllis Ocker Field, while capturing their second straight Big Ten regular-season title and reaching the NCAA quarterfinals.
