ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team will host a doubleheader against San Jose State on Wednesday (March 27) beginning at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Due to a scheduling change, Tuesday's scheduled series opener was moved to Wednesday and both games will be shortened to a pair of seven-inning contests.
After taking on one team of Spartans, the Wolverines will square off with Michigan State this weekend to kick off the Big Ten schedule. Michigan will face the Spartans in East Lansing on Friday (March 29) and Sunday (March 31) with a home game on Saturday (March 30), which will begin at 2 p.m. The games at Michigan State will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
• Following the midweek games, Michigan will open up Big Ten action this weekend with its annual home-and-home series against in-state rival Michigan State. The Spartans are 0-3 in conference play after getting swept at Nebraska last weekend.
• The Wolverines are 5-0 when playing at home this season, thanks to a win over in-state foe Western Michigan (March 19) and a four-game series sweep of Manhattan (March 14-17). When playing at Ray Fisher Stadium, the Maize and Blue offense has combined for a .366 batting average and has outscored opponents by 45 runs (60-15). The Michigan pitching staff has held opponents to a .187 average and combined for a 2.51 earned-run average when inside the Wilpon Complex.
• Michigan and San Jose State have squared off twice in program history, with Michigan taking both games. The Maize and Blue walked away from the last meeting (Feb. 27, 2017) with a 6-2 victory after scoring four runs in the second inning.
• The Spartans enter the week with a 14-9 record and having won back-to-back games after taking a series at Fresno State last weekend. San Jose State is looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002, when the Spartans earned an at-large bid but were knocked out in the regional.
• The Maize and Blue wrapped up a tough weekend in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday (March 23) with a 16-6 neutral-site win over Stetson. Every Michigan starter had at least one hit while eight different players drove in at least one run in the 18-hit barrage. The victory also featured back-to-back homers from sophomore Jesse Franklin and junior Jordan Brewer, which marked the first time it has happened since 2017.
• Despite a 1-3 weekend, Michigan has five players hitting above the .300 mark, including senior Blake Nelson (.422), junior Jordan Brewer (.381), sophomores Jordan Nwogu (.344) and Jack Blomgren (.320), and junior Christan Bullock (.302). Brewer leads the Wolverines with a .714 slugging percentage, 26 RBI, seven homers and 10 stolen bases, while Nelson leads the team with a .533 on-base percentage.
• Offensively, Michigan leads the Big Ten in stolen bases (39) and scoring (7.0 runs per game). The Wolverines also rank in the top three among conference opponents in total hits, walks, batting average, slugging percentage, doubles, triples, home runs, on-base percentage, runs scored and sacrifice flyouts.
• Though he suffered his first loss of the season at Texas Tech on Thursday (March 21), junior ace Tommy Henry saw his ERA drop last weekend as he scatted a season-high seven hits. The lefty ranks first in the Big Ten and fifth in the nation with a 0.45 earned-run average over 39.2 innings while also leading the conference and ranking tied for 13th among Division-I pitchers with 53 strikeouts.
• Following a 1-3 showing last weekend, Michigan dropped out of the national polls this week. The Wolverines were previously ranked in at least three of the six polls each week dating back to the preseason. Illinois is the lone Big Ten team in the rankings.
