ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team received impressive pitching performances Wednesday (March 27) as the Wolverines swept the visiting San Jose State Spartans by scores of 1-0 and 3-0 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Due to a scheduling change, Tuesday's series opener was moved to Wednesday and both games were shortened to seven innings each.
In the opening game, three Michigan pitchers scattered seven hits and junior Jordan Brewer plated the only run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Michigan put a runner on third base in each of the first three innings and a runner into scoring position in the fourth but could not capitalize. The Wolverines broke through in the fifth when sophomore Jesse Franklin roped a one-out double to the wall in right. He immediately stole third base and came home on Brewer's sac fly for a 1-0 lead.
That lead held up as three U-M pitchers limited SJSU to four singles in the game. Freshman left-hander Walker Cleveland (2-1) earned the victory in relief as he tossed two innings of no-hit baseball. Junior righty Karl Kauffmann worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn a save.
In game two, U-M was hitless into the fourth when a bizarre play helped get the home team on the scoreboard. Brewer led off with a fly ball to right-center field and, running hard all the way, ended up on third base when SJSU's center fielder Kellen Strahm was ruled to have dropped the ball when he tried to quickly catch and transfer to his throwing hand. The next batter, fifth-year senior Miles Lewis, roped a sharp grounder to third base that SJSU's Troy Viola could not handle. The shot was ruled a hit, and Brewer scored as it bounded into left field. Two batters later, sophomore Jack Blomgren completed an impressive at-bat with a long double to the gap in left to bring home two runs and make it a 3-0 game.
That inning also held up as four pitchers combined for the shutout. Sophomore left-hander Angelo Smith (1-0) started the game and earned the win after pitching four scoreless innings. Weiss worked around a pair of baserunners in the seventh to earn his sixth save of the year.
Michigan (17-7) will open Big Ten play Friday (March 29) at Michigan State in a 1 p.m. game. The teams will change venues for Saturday's (March 30) 2 p.m. contest at the Wilpon Complex, before finishing the series back in East Lansing on Sunday (March 31) at 4 p.m. Friday and Sunday's games will be aired live on Big Ten Network.
