GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Paced by an even-par 72 from freshman Ashley Lau, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted its second sub-300 team tally of 298 Sunday (March 31) and finished 10th with a 901 54-hole total at the Bryan National Collegiate played at the Bryan National Golf Course.
"There were plenty of really solid stretches of golf from each player, and I can see our team gaining confidence as we head into the postseason," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Bryan Park requires some demanding tee shots and approach shots to score well. We did that really well, which goes a long way to build additional confidence. We are excited to work on a few things as we head into the Lady Buckeye and postseason."
With an opening-round 73 (+1) from freshman Sophia Trombetta and 74s from Lau and junior Hannah Ghelfi, the Wolverines posted a 299 team score in Friday's (March 29) first round and positioned themselves ninth in the 17-team field. Falling ever so slightly off the pace in Saturday's second round, the Wolverines dropped two positions to 11th after a 304 tally paced by Lau's second straight 74 combined with 76s from Ghelfi and sophomore Ashley Kim.
Parring the entire back nine and using two birdies to erase two bogeys on the front side, Lau carded U-M's tournament-low tally of even-par 72 in Sunday's final round to help U-M close with its second sub-300 effort (298). With a 901 team score, the Wolverines moved up one spot and closed 10th in the three-day event.
Lau led U-M for a second straight event and third time this season with her 220 (74-74-72) total. She posted her fourth top 25 individual finish this season, tying for 21st.
"Ashley (Lau) really had a fantastic tournament," added Dowling. "The course is challenging and requires some excellent course management, which she handled very well. She's so even keeled, and that always helps her be so consistent. She's a few putts away from breaking out and winning, which is so fun to see."
Ghelfi tied for 47th at 227 (74-76-77), while Kim (78-76-74) and Trombetta (73-79-74) tied for 49th with 228 scores.
The Wolverines will close their regular season in Big Ten country, heading to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14 for Ohio State's Lady Buckeye Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played on the famed Scarlet Course on the Buckeyes' campus.
