INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team scored the final 10 points of the second overtime, knocking off Wisconsin, 73-65, on Friday afternoon (March 8) in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at Banker's Life Fieldhouse. With the win, Michigan has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament for the fourth time in program history and first since 2001.
Wisconsin struck first in the second overtime, scoring with just under three minutes to go. Michigan went to work after that, with senior Hallie Thome hitting a 17-foot jumper to knot the score at 65 with 2:33 left. Thome followed that up by hitting two of four free throws over the next minute, staking Michigan a two-point advantage with 1:35 remaining.
Freshman Naz Hillmon drew a charge on Wisconsin's offensive possession, giving Michigan the ball back with 1:11 left. Sophomore Hailey Brown found Thome underneath with 32 ticks remaining as the lefty converted the layup to push Michigan's lead to four.
Following a Wisconsin timeout, Hillmon stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and then hit two free throws. U-M once again got a stop on the defensive end, with sophomore Deja Church making good on a final pair at the line to seal Michigan's eight-point win.
Thome led the way for Michigan, going for 18 points and seven rebounds. Hillmon turned in 15 points, seven rebounds and drew eight fouls in the contest. Brown rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers with 12 points, as freshman Amy Dilk had nine points and nine rebounds in her return to Indiana. Michigan held a 39-36 advantage on the glass and passed out 23 assists.
The teams went back-and-forth in the early going but Michigan grabbed a 16-11 lead after 10 minutes as Hillmon split a pair of free throws with 0.1 remaining on the clock after an official review.
Michigan took an 18-11 lead in the early stages of the second quarter, but Wisconsin made good on a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to take a 29-28 lead into the half.
Senior Nicole Munger hit a corner triple from Thome, forcing a Wisconsin timeout with 6:21 left in the third quarter as Michigan regained a 37-33 lead.
After Wisconsin answered with a run to regain the lead, Hillmon converted a three-point play with 4.8 seconds left to give Michigan a 46-45 lead after three quarters.
Junior Kayla Robbins hit a pair of free throws to start the fourth to push Michigan's lead to three, but Wisconsin hit a triple to beat the shot clock on the ensuing possession to tie it back up at 48.
U-M seized a 56-49 lead with 3:50 left, but turnovers plagued the Wolverines down the stretch as Wisconsin was able to climb back in the contest. Dilk gave Michigan a two-point lead on a layup with 33 seconds left, but Wisconsin answered on the ensuing possession to eventually send the game to overtime.
Both teams managed five points each in overtime, as Wisconsin hit one free throw with 3.4 seconds left, tying the game at 63 to set up the second extra period.
Michigan next will face No. 1 seed Maryland, the No. 8-ranked team in the country, on Saturday (March 9) in the semifinals at 5 p.m.
