PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team kept the game close to the end, but eight goals from the Rutgers attack unit proved to be too much to overcome as the Wolverines fell, 11-9, Saturday (April 20) at Rutgers' HighPoint.com Stadium.
Senior Brent Noseworthy marked two scores and an assist in the first quarter, with the Wolverines (3-9, 0-4 Big Ten) and Scarlet Knights (7-6, 2-2 Big Ten) tied at 4 after the first quarter. U-M led, 2-1, in the opening 2:10, and the two teams traded goals the rest of the stanza.
After an Owen Mead score at 11:15 gave Rutgers a 5-4 lead, Noseworthy answered with his third of the day at 8:23 to knot the contest at 5, which would remain the score as the teams headed into halftime. The marker gave Noseworthy his third hat trick of the season.
Coming out of the half, the Scarlet Knights outscored the Wolverines, 4-1, in the third. The quarter started with a 2-0 Rutgers run in the opening six minutes before sophomore Alex Buckanavage fed junior Avery Myers, who finished in close to bring the count to 7-6 in favor or Rutgers with 7:41 to play in the third. Rutgers answered with a pair of goals to close the quarter and took a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth.
U-M went on its own run to start the fourth, with Myers notching his second of the day at 13:29 and Mack scoring at 10:34 to cut the lead to 9-8 with 10:34 to play. Rutgers' Adam Charalambides scored his fifth goal of the day with 6:32 to go to stretch the Scarlet Knight lead to 10-8. Following a goal by senior Decker Curran with 3:47 to play, Charalambides scored his game-high sixth of the contest with 1:34 left to secure the Scarlet Knights' victory.
U-M outshot Rutgers, 32-30, while the two teams combined for 47 turnovers with U-M responsible for 22 of them. Freshman close defender Andrew Darby had four ground balls, while junior longpole Finn Goonan caused three turnovers.
With the loss eliminating U-M from a berth in the four-team Big Ten Tournament, Michigan will close out its 2019 campaign on Friday (April 26) when it plays host to Ohio State on Senior Day at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The matchup will begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
