
Duke, Syracuse, Virginia on Deck for Wolverines

» Michigan heads into the weekend coming off a strong showing against No. 5 Yale and No. 19 Harvard-Radcliffe, as U-M swept the 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and 2V4 races.
» The performance helped bump Michigan up to No. 6 in the latest polls.
» This begins a stretch of three straight weekends on the road for U-M after opening the season at home.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan rowing team hits the road for its first regatta away from home in the early portion of the 2019 season. After playing host for a Big Ten-Ivy League double-dual regatta last weekend (March 29-30), the Wolverines travel to the University of Virginia for a day of racing on Saturday (April 6) against the No. 10-ranked Cavaliers, as well as the No. 17-ranked Syracuse Orange and Duke Blue Devils on Lake Monticello.
U-M will race Virginia in the morning for the first session and Duke and Syracuse in the second session. This is Michigan's first trip to Virginia since the 2014-15 season.
The double-dual format will begin with races at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the first session, and 12 p.m. for the second session. Ohio State will also be present for the meet, rowing against ACC programs present for competition.
Michigan will travel two varsity eight boats, three varsity four boats and one novice eight boat to the competition.

Things to Know
• The Maize and Blue enters this weekend's races fresh off its first Big Ten honor of the year. The first varsity eight boat was named Big Ten Boat of the Week on Tuesday (April 2).
• Michigan entered the top-six this week in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches' Poll after beginning the season ranked No. 9. U-M has been a top-10 preseason team four of the last five seasons.
• No. 10 Virginia comes into the weekend after a strong season opener at the Pac-12 Invite. UVA's 2V8 picked up a win on USC, while its first and second varsity fours earned wins over Cal and Stanford.
• Duke is coming off a midweek trip to New Jersey for the Cooper Sprints with fellow ACC opponents and is also receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll.
• Meanwhile, No. 17 Syracuse's last time on the water led to a runner-up team finish at the Doc Hosea Invitational, where they finished 23 points behind the winning program, Rutgers.
• Twelve athletes made varsity debuts during last weekend's competition: Jessica Schoonbee (first varsity eight), Jeri Rhodes (second varsity eight), Lillian Mei (first varsity four), Julia Gehlert (second varsity four), Audrey Gordon, Caroline McGee (third varsity four), Ally Eggleton, Tacy Greissinger, Kendra Sanders, Taylor Toudouze (fourth varsity four) and coxswains Sujin Kim (first varsity four) and Fleur De Jong (third varsity four).
• Overall, the Big Ten has seven teams ranked in the top 20 nationally: Michigan, Ohio State (seventh), Wisconsin (11th), Iowa (13th), Rutgers (15th), Indiana (19th) and Minnesota (20th). The Wolverines are first in the poll among Big Ten programs.
• Last weekend's event at Belleville Lake was the first of two hosting opportunities for U-M this spring. The Wolverines will welcome Louisville and Michigan State on Senior Day (May 5).
• U-M's Scholar Stories series has continued this year, and the latest subject is our own Emily Krebs, a biomedical engineer who recounts the story of her time at Michigan.
• The Michigan Daily celebrated March as Women in Sports month, and fans may be interested in reading a recent story by writer Lane Kizziah which spotlights our novice program.
• The Daily also ran an entertaining feature on senior Caroline Hendershot, whose involvement in sports broadcasting is shaping her career opportunities off the water.
