ORLANDO, Fla. -- Seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team put forth a valiant effort but fell in three sets in the national championship match of the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Saturday (May 25) at the USTA National Campus.
It was all UCLA early in the first set as the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The teams exchanged holds of serve to make the score 5-1 in favor of UCLA.
Michigan won the next three games, closing the deficit to 5-4 but was still down a break. UCLA went back to serve for the set and took a 40-15 lead. Michigan fought off three set points and won a Minor forehand return on serve on the deuce point to tie the set at 5.
U-M held its serve the next time back to the line, taking a 6-5 lead. UCLA double faulted on set point for Michigan, wrapping up a 7-5 Michigan win in the first set.
Fahey started the second set with the serve as U-M fell behind 15-40 in the first game. Minor and Fahey won the next three points, holding for a 1-0 lead.
Neither team could hold serve in the middle stages of the set as UCLA took a 5-4 lead after breaking Michigan after a deuce-point winner. UCLA once again headed back to serve out the set but Michigan grabbed a 15-40 lead. Michigan was able to take advantage of the opportunity, tying the set at 5.
U-M fell in a 15-40 hole in its service game, as UCLA was able to break for a 6-5 lead. Michigan broke back for a 6-6 tie, sending the second set to a tiebreaker.
UCLA won the three final points of the breaker, fighting off a Michigan match point to take an 8-6 win to send the match to a 10-point tiebreaker.
The teams went back and forth during the 10-point tiebreaker, with U-M grabbing a 7-5 lead. U-M fought off a match point as UCLA took a 9-8 lead to tie it at 9. The Bruins won the next two points to take the match.
Fahey ends her career as the winningest singles player in school history (132), with Minor ranking seventh with 110 wins.
