ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Derick Broche netted a brace and bagged an assist on the game-winning goal in his first career start to propel the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over SIUE on Labor Day (Sept. 2) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
After sitting out all of his freshman season recovering from an injury, Broche got his first career start on Monday and wasted little time making an impact, putting U-M ahead in the fourth minute. Junior Marc Ybarra played out wide to junior Umar Farouk Osman, who crossed in a beautiful ball to the near post. Broche ran up on it and connected with a diving header, skirting the ball past SIUE goalkeeper Noah Heim for the 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines held the run of play for the majority of the game, holding the Cougars to two shots through 73 minutes. The visitors nabbed the equalizer the following minute, as Jorge Gonzalez headed home a cross from Vincent Jackson, knotting the score, 1-1.
SIUE grabbed the momentum for the next 10 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Verdi was called into action to make a vital save -- his only one of the match -- in the 85th minute, denying Mathias Krigbaum at close range.
Michigan found the eventual game-winner two minutes later, taking advantage of a miscue from Heim. The goalkeeper took a little too much time and attempted to kick the ball long, but Broche rushed in to pressure and got a deflection on the clearance. With Heim out of the net and out of position, the ball trickled to graduate student Nebojsa Popovic, who slotted it into the lower-right corner for the 2-1 lead.
Less than 90 seconds later, Popovic played a lovely ball through to Broche, who ran down the right flank. He took a few dribbles, brought it on his right foot and roofed a shot past Heim to the far-back corner, finalizing the scoring at 3-1.
Michigan's homestand will continue this weekend with two more matches at U-M Soccer Stadium, beginning Friday (Sept. 6) vs. Cornell. First touch is slated for 5 p.m., and the match has been designated as Maize Out.
