ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior guard/forward Leigha Brown has been granted immediate eligibility by both the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference to play with the University of Michigan women's basketball team during the 2020-21 season.
"We are excited and thankful that Leigha will be able to play this season," head coach Kim Barnes Arico said. "She has been an amazing addition to our program these last few months, with both her skill set and her experience playing at the highest level. I can't wait for her to step on the court in a Michigan jersey."
Brown, who played her first two seasons at Nebraska, was named the 2020 Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year after leading the Huskers in scoring with 14.4 points per game. She also chipped in 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor. She scored in double figures 23 times, highlighted by eight 20-point games on the year. During her freshman season in Lincoln, Brown appeared in all 30 games and averaged 9.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
As a senior at DeKalb (Indiana) High School, she averaged 28.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.7 steals a game en route to being named an Indiana All-Star alongside current Wolverines Amy Dilk and Emily Kiser.
Michigan, which went 22-11 last season, returns a trio of double-figure scorers in Naz Hillmon (17.4 ppg), Dilk (11.6 ppg) and Akienreh Johnson (10.3 ppg).
With the Big Ten continuing to work on a scheduling format during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wolverines have not released a revised 2020-21 schedule after the NCAA approved moving the first contest date to Nov. 25. Programs across the country started practice on Oct. 14.
