Michigan Jumps Out to Early Lead, Rolls to Rout of Butler

ANN ARBOR, Mich. The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its season with 93-54 midweek win over Butler on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at Crisler Center.
Junior Naz Hillmon recorded her fourth 20-plus-point performance of the season with 25 points to lead the Wolverines, while Leigha Brown added 19 points, Michelle Sidor scored a career-best 16 and Akienreh Johnson had 12. Sidor tied a career best with four three-pointers, three coming in the second quarter.
On the glass, junior Amy Dilk grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Hillmon had seven and Hailey Brown added six. U-M pulled down 45 rebounds, while Butler managed 25.
Michigan opened the game on a 12-0 run, including five points from Hillmon, before Butler got its first points on free throws with 4:49 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines tacked on seven more points and gave up just one field goal to the Bulldogs the rest of the stanza to take a 19-5 advantage into the second quarter.
Coming in off the bench, Sidor made three triples to help extend the Michigan advantage to 35-15 in the second quarter. The Wolverines offense went 6-for-8 from the field, including an and-one play from Hillmon with 4:03 left in the half, to give U-M a 40-18 lead.
The Wolverines knocked down six three-pointers and shot 61.7 percent overall in the second quarter to take a 49-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Hillmon led the Wolverines with 13 points and Johnson added 12 points.
The Wolverines kept rolling in the third quarter, and a pair of made free throws by Leigha Brown extended the U-M advantage to 30 points, 62-32, heading into the media timeout with under five minutes remaining in the period.
Butler went on a short 6-0 run, but it was quickly dashed by back-to-back baskets from Hillmon to put Michigan ahead, 70-44, with one quarter left to play.
U-M's lead was far too large for Butler to overcome as Sidor tacked on seven more points in the closin6 10 minutes and the Wolverines cruised to te win.
The Wolverines shot 55.6 percent (35-for-63), while the Bulldogs were held to 30.5 percent shooting (18-for-59).
Michigan has a 10-day break before it starts Big Ten play against Illinois on Dec. 19 in Champaign. Game time and network designation are to be announced.
