ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field will suit up ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Championships for one last time this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 21-22), including at the final home indoor meet of the 2020 season.
Select Wolverines will be competing at home on Friday at the Silverston Invitational, while the distance medley relay team will travel to Notre Dame on Saturday in hopes of putting down an NCAA Championships qualifying time at the Alex Wilson Invitational, to be held at Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Indiana.
Silverston Invitational
Friday's Silverston Invitational at the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building will be the final opportunity for select Wolverines to tune up for the Big Ten Championships, while others will use it as an opportunity to gear up for the outdoor season. Competition will begin both in the field and on the track at 4 p.m., with events expected to conclude before 8 p.m.
Distance runner Joost Plaetinck headlines the Michigan contingent competing at home, where he won the Simmons-Harvey Invitational 3,000-meter title earlier this season. Also among those competing are the two best freshman heptathletes in Michigan history in Mason Mahacek and Heath Baldwin, who will both run the 60-meter hurdles. High jumper Brandon Piwinski, a 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier, headlines the field event action as he tunes up for Big Tens.
Admission for the Silverston Invitational is free of charge, with doors opening to spectators at 3 p.m. Live results will be available through Delta Timing, and free live streams -- pointed at each of the field events and at the track in separate feeds -- will be available on MGoBlue.com
Additionally, 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships scorer Will Landowne will contest the 3,000 meters at one of the two meets this weekend, to be determined.
Updates will be provided throughout the weekend from both meets on the team's official Twitter account, @umichtrack.
Alex Wilson Invitational
On Saturday, the distance medley relay team will be in action at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational looking to lay down a time that could put them in the hunt for the NCAA Championships. The relay team -- which will be composed of a combination of four runners from among Anthony Berry, Nick Foster, Ben Hill, Cole Johnson and Ian Davis -- will take to the track at 12:10 p.m.
Berry, Hill and Johnson have all been running at or near career-best levels in 2020 -- with Berry having moved to No. 7 in school history at 800 meters -- while Davis has joined the all-time Michigan top 10 at 200 meters (tied No. 9), 400 meters (tied No. 10) and 600 meters (No. 7). He is the only man in school history currently ranked top-10 in all three events.
The 12 fastest teams nationally will qualify for the NCAA Championships in March, with the cutoff expected to be under 9:30 or 9:29. Three teams have already dipped under that threshold, with many more expected on a weekend that traditionally produces a large share of the NCAA-qualifying times.
Results will be provided via Endurance Race Timing for the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Wolverine Bites
• The Wolverines, led by head coaches Jerry Clayton and James Henry, checked in at No. 33 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Track and Field Rating Index (TFRI) that was released Monday (Feb. 17).
• Michigan has been especially strong in the 60-meter hurdles in 2020, with the quartet of Josh Zeller, Roland Amarteifio, Job Mayhue and Sierra Hendrix-Williams ranked among the best hurdles corps in the nation. The USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings -- which rank each team's depth in each event based on their top four performers -- has Michigan slotted in at No. 5. Zeller and Amarteifio have both gone sub-8.00, with Zeller's 7.86 ranked No. 2 in school history and fourth among freshmen nationally in 2020.
