ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field will suit up for one last time this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 21-22) ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Championships, including at the final home indoor meet of the 2020 season.
Select Wolverines will be competing at home on Friday at the Silverston Invitational, while the distance medley relay team will travel to Notre Dame -- the site of last year's Big Ten-record performance -- on Saturday in hopes of putting down an NCAA Championships qualifying time at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Friday's Silverston Invitational at the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building will be the final opportunity for select Wolverines to tune-up for the Big Ten Championships, while others will use it as an opportunity to gear up for the outdoor season. Competition begins both in the field and on the track at 4 p.m., with events expected to conclude before 8 p.m.
Headlining the Michigan contingent competing at home on Friday are first-year collegians in Madison Eaton and Ameia Wilson. Eaton will be in action for the first time since running in a loaded 60-meter hurdles final at the Power Five Invitational, while Wilson will look to continue a strong debut season in the long jump and sprints.
Admission for the Silverston Invitational is free of charge, with doors opening to spectators at 3 p.m. Live results will be available through Delta Timing, free live streams -- pointed at each of the field events and at the track in separate feeds -- will be available on MGoBlue.com
On Saturday, the distance medley relay team will be in action at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational looking to lay down a time that could qualify Michigan to nationals for the 17th time in the past 18 years.
Returning All-Americans Alice Hill, Chloe Foster, Aurora Rynda and Meg Darmofal will team up for the DMR for the first time since finishing sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2019. In the meantime, all four women have recorded personal records in multiple events: Hill and Darmofal have scored PRs in the mile in 2020, Rynda recorded a new 800-meter best last weekend and Foster has PR'ed at both 400 and 600 meters in 2020.
Hill, Foster and Rynda ran legs of last year's team that clocked 10:54.47 for a new school record and the fastest time in Big Ten history.
The 12 fastest teams nationally will qualify for the NCAA Championships in March, with the cutoff expected to be faster than 11:00. Five teams have already met that threshold in 2020, and more are expected to do so on this final pre-conference championships weekend.
Michigan has won four national titles in the event -- in 2013, 2005, 1998 and 1994 -- tied for the most in NCAA Championships history with Tennessee.
Also competing individually are Amber Gall and Annie Taylor at 800 meters, and Jena Metwalli in the mile.
Results will be provided via Endurance Race Timing for the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Updates will be provided throughout the weekend from both meets on the team's official Twitter account, @umichtrack.
Wolverine Bites
• The Wolverines, led by head coaches James Henry and Jerry Clayton, are ranked No. 59 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Track and Field Rating Index (TFRI) released Monday (Feb. 10).
• Michigan's mid-distance corps has been among the best in the nation in 2020, as per usual. The USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings -- which ranks each team's depth in each event based on their top-four performers -- has Michigan slotted in at No. 4 nationally at 800 meters and No. 8 in the mile. The trio of Meg Darmofal, Alice Hill and Annie Taylor have all run personal records and are ranked top-65 nationally in both events, bolstering the Wolverines in both events. Aurora Rynda debuted in a career-best and 2020 team-best 2:05.36 for 800 meters to boost Michigan's standing at 800 meters, and first-year collegian Ericka VanderLende rounded out the group in the mile.
• The quartet of Chloe Foster, Jade Harrison, Emma Lane and Julia Hall combined to run a school-record 3:36.70 in the 4x400 relay at the Arkansas Tyson Invitational last weekend. Looking at their standing in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings in the open 400-meter event, it's no wonder why. The quartet is ranked No. 12 nationally, with Foster, Harrison and Lane all under 55 seconds. This is the only time in school history three women have run sub-55.00 in the same indoor season.
• The relay was not the only school record broken this past weekend. Weight thrower Courtney Jacobsen topped her own record by two centimeters at the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge, going 20.17m (66-2.25).
• Current school record-holders: Hill, Foster and Rynda (distance medley relay); Foster, Lane, Harrison and Hall (indoor 4x400 relay), Jacobsen (weight throw); Harrison (indoor 400 meters)
