Michigan Uses Late Run to Sweep MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 7-0 run in the middle stages of the fourth quarter after Michigan State took a 49-48 lead to regain control en route to a 65-57 win over the Spartans on Sunday evening (Feb. 23) at the Breslin Center. With the win, Michigan secured a season sweep of the Spartans for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
Michigan State grabbed a 49-48 lead with 7:58 remaining in the contest, its first lead since the beginning stages of the first quarter.
U-M responded with a 7-0 run, getting a three-point play from sophomore Naz Hillmon to regain a 51-49 lead with 6:53 to go. Senior Akienreh Johnson made a pair of free throws the next time down, and Hillmon scored again down low off her own miss to stake Michigan a 55-49 lead at the 5:33 mark.
Michigan's lead never dipped below four the rest of the way as sophomore Amy Dilk went 8-for-8 at the free-throw line to keep the Spartans at bay.
Hillmon recorded her 10th double-double of the season, going for 26 points and 13 boards. Dilk had 15 points, seven boards and six assists, with freshman Izabel Varejão going for 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Michigan made 25 free throws in the contest, including an 11-for-14 showing in the final period. Michigan held a 49-29 advantage on the glass, accumulating 14 second-chance points.
Michigan held MSU without a field goal for the final 5:09 of the first quarter for a 14-9 lead after 10 minutes.
U-M embarked on an 8-0 run that culminated in a 40-22 lead on a layup from Hillmon with 1:07 left in the period. The run featured three points from Hillmon, three from Dilk and a steal-and-score layup from Maddie Nolan.
Michigan hit the break with a 40-25 lead after MSU scored the final three points of the period. U-M outscored the Spartans, 26-16, in the second period behind 10 points from Hillmon and five from Dilk. Hillmon nearly had a double-double in the first half with 17 points and eight boards.
Michigan came out of the gates slow in the third quarter as MSU scored 10 of the first 11 points to cut Michigan's lead to 41-36 with 5:08 remaining. Following a Michigan timeout, Hillmon scored on U-M's ensuing possession off an assist from Dilk for a 43-36 advantage with 4:53 on the clock.
MSU held Michigan to just seven points in the third quarter, trimming Michigan's lead to four, 47-44, entering the final period.
The Spartans regained the lead momentarily at the 7:58 mark before U-M went on a 7-0 run and never looked back.
Michigan will close out the road portion of its regular-season schedule Thursday (Feb. 27), traveling to Penn State for a 7 p.m. game.
