ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three matches off court in a 4-0 shutout of No. 24-ranked Florida on Tuesday evening (Feb. 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan grabbed the early lead by virtue of the doubles point. U-M won matches at No. 3 and No. 1 to clinch the first point of the match.
It was all Maize and Blue at No. 3, as sophomore Anca Craciun and junior Alyvia Jones won the first five games en route to a 6-1 win.
Florida evened the ledger at one match each behind a 6-2 win at No. 2, but Michigan was just two points away from victory at No. 1 at the time.
Michigan's No. 1 pair of seniors Chiara Lommer and Giulia Pairone kept Florida at bay early, taking a 6-3 win. Michigan won a deuce point in the first game on Pairone's serve to stay on serve, propelling the Wolverines to wins in the first three games for a 3-0 lead. Michigan never looked back, cashing in on its second match point for the early lead.
Freshman Nicole Hammond staked Michigan a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Hammond won the first two games in each set, taking control early in the straight-set win.
Pairone put Michigan on the brink of victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 37 McCartney Kessler. Pairone built early leads in each set, eventually breaking Kessler in the final game on a double fault.
Craciun put U-M's fourth point up, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 in her first dual-match action of the season. Much like the previous victorious Wolverines, Craciun jumped out to early leads in both sets to grab the win.
The remaining matches were abandoned, with Michigan winning five first sets to firmly stay in control of the team match.
