
Michigan Knocks Off Illinois at ITA Indoors

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches off court to secure a 4-1 win over Illinois in its final match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Sunday evening (Feb. 9) at the XS Tennis Center.
It was all Michigan at No. 2 doubles, with the senior duo of Chiara Lommer and Giulia Pairone breezing to a 6-1 victory.
At No. 1, freshman Andrea Cerdan and junior Alyvia Jones struck with a break at 3-2, eventually taking a 4-2 lead. Illinois came back, eventually tying the match at 5-5. The Wolverine pair won the final two games, sealing a 7-5 win at the top spot for the doubles point. Michigan led 6-5 at the No. 3 position when the match was abandoned.
Jones wasted no time putting Michigan's second point on the board, winning 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Jones won the first 10 games of the match, winning her third match of the weekend.
Freshman Nicole Hammond was next off court, winning 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3. Hammond broke on a deuce point to wrap up a 7-5 first-set decision before racing out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Hammond dropped just one game in the second set to account for Michigan's third point.
Illinois got a point back with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2.
Lommer clinched the Michigan victory with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Lommer was down, 5-3, in the first set before ripping off four straight games for the 7-5 win. Lommer won the first five games of the second set and did not look back in her third singles win of the weekend.
Michigan will be back in action Saturday (Feb. 15), traveling to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers at 11 a.m.
