
Michigan's Rally at Virginia Falls Short

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team saw its late rally fall short in a 4-1 loss to No. 13-ranked Virginia on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) at the Boar's Head Tennis Club.
Michigan was down, 3-1, in the team match, needing all three remaining matches to get the win. U-M forced third sets at No. 2 and No. 5, and was headed to a third set at No. 6 to remain alive in the team match. Virginia took advantage of a late break in the third set at No. 5 to wrap up a 4-1 team victory.
Virginia struck first with the doubles point, getting wins at No. 3 and No. 1 for the early 1-0 lead.
The Hoos grabbed a quick 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles to take early control of the match's first point, but Michigan's No. 2 pair of sophomore Anca Craciun and junior Alyvia Jones countered with a 6-4 victory to even the ledger.
It was tied, 4-4, at the No. 1 spot when all eyes turned to it, with seniors Giulia Pairone and Chiara Lommer recovering from an early break to get back on serve. Virginia held on its serve for a 5-4 lead, sending Pairone back to the service line to stay in the match.
Virginia won the final three points of the game, breaking a 15-all tie to seal the 6-4 victory for the doubles point.
Michigan won first sets at No. 4 from Lommer and a big rally from junior Bella Lorenzini at No. 6. Lorenzini was down 4-1 at the No. 6 spot before winning five of the next seven game to force a breaker. It was all Lorenzini in the tiebreaker as she jumped out to an early lead, and while holding a 4-3 lead, she won the final three points to wrap up the set.
Virginia pushed its lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1.
Michigan got on the board courtesy of a straight-set win from Lommer at No. 4. The lefty fell in an early hole in the first set but battled back by winning the final five games for a 6-3 win. Lommer once again found herself in an early 3-1 hole in the second but broke for a 4-3 lead and held in the ensuing game for a 5-3 lead. Both players held their serve over the next two games as Lommer put Michigan's second point up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 87 Sofia Munera.
Virginia took a 3-1 lead behind a three-set win at No. 2. Freshman Nicole Hammond bounced back from a first-set loss to win a 6-4 second set and force a third. She found herself in a 4-1 hole in the third before coming back to get on serve at 4-5. Hammond had two game points but a drop shot from No. 55 Rosie Johanson forced a deuce point. Hammond's second serve found the net, sealing the Virginia win.
Freshman Andrea Cerdan and Jones, at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, were able to force third sets after each dropping first sets to keep Michigan alive in the team match.
It was all Jones in the second set at No. 5 as she wrapped up a 6-1 win to head to a third. Jones fell behind 3-0 to start the third before storming back to get back on serve at 3-4. She lost on the deuce point on her serve, giving Vivian Glozman a 5-3 lead. Jones fought off one match point on Glozman's serve, but the Cavalier made good on the second to clinch the team match with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5.
Cerdan was facing a 5-2 deficit in the third at No. 3 when her match was abandoned. Lorenzini had just begun a third set at No. 6, already going up a break at 1-0 as Virginia put the fourth point on the board.
Michigan will take a week off before returning home to the Varsity Tennis Center to host Princeton on Feb. 28. The match will begin at 6 p.m.
