SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior righty Blake Beers was dominant on the mound and the Wolverine offense broke through late as the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Cal Poly, 4-2, on Sunday (March 1) to earn the series win at Baggett Stadium.
Beers (2-1) tossed eight strong innings on the mound, striking out six Mustangs while surrendering just one earned run on two hits and picking up the win for Michigan (6-4). Senior Benjamin Keizer threw the final inning, picking up his first save of the season with no walks and two strikeouts in the frame.
The junior duo of Jordan Nwogu and Jack Blomgren led the way offensively for the Wolverines, with Nwogu going 4-for-5 at the dish and Blomgren adding a 3-for-4 game with two RBI.
For the third time in the series, Michigan trailed early, but the offense put together a comeback in the late innings.
Trailing, 1-0, in the sixth, Blomgren picked up a two-out RBI by driving home freshman Clark Elliott. In the next half-inning, the Mustangs broke the tie and reclaimed the lead heading into the seventh inning.
The Maize and Blue once again knotted the score thanks to a two-out RBI single from Blomgren, evening the score at 2.
That tie turned into a 4-2 Michigan lead in the eighth when sophomore first baseman Cam Hart hit a run-scoring single and freshman Ted Burton added a sacrifice fly.
On the day, the Wolverines out-hit the Mustangs, 12-4, and Michigan pitching held Cal Poly to 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
The Wolverines' spring-break trip through the Golden State will send them to the Bay Area, as Michigan will takes on Stanford on Tuesday (March 3) in Palo Alto, California.
