BERKELEY, Calif. -- A first-inning double from sophomore Riley Bertram provided the spark for the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan baseball team's offense, and five Wolverine pitchers combined to blank California, 5-0, Wednesday (March 4) at Evans Diamond. The shutout was U-M's second of the season.
Sophomore Walker Cleveland (1-0) threw the first four innings of the game and picked up his first win of the season. After Cleveland departed, sophomore Keaton Carattini, freshman Jacob Denner and redshirt seniors Joe Pace and Benjamin Keizer combined for keep the Golden Bears (3-9) off the scoreboard. Michigan (7-5)Â also shut out another Pac-12 opponent in Arizona State by a 5-0 score earlier in the season (Feb. 15).
Michigan's offense scored three runs out of the gate thanks to three hits and a pair of walks. Bertram's two-run double was preceded by an RBI infield single from freshman Clark Elliott.
As both teams placed zeroes on the board for the next three innings, the Maize and Blue got a lift from junior Joe Donovan in the fifth. The Michigan catcher launched his first home run of the 2020 campaign into the California night to give Michigan a 4-0 lead.
Bertram came through once again for the Wolverines in the seventh inning, driving home the game's fifth run with a two-out single that brought home junior Jack Blomgren.
Freshman Tito Flores picked up his first career hit with a ninth-inning single, as the Wolverines and Golden Bears each finished the game with seven hits.
The Wolverines will return to Southern California on Friday (March 6) when it opens a three-game series against No. 24 Pepperdine at 2 p.m. PST at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu.
