ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team will hit the road for the first time during the 2021 season as it competes at Indiana's Gladstein Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 23).
Saturday's competition against Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue will serve as both a ramping up of the winter indoor campaign for the track-and-field-specific student-athletes in the sprints, mid-distance and field events, and a final tune-up for next Saturday's Big Ten Cross Country Championships for the dual track/cross country competitors on the roster.
Many of the standouts from last weekend's Simmons-Harvey Invitational will be back in action looking to build on their 2021 debut efforts, including NCAA 600-meter leader Ziyah Holman; All-Americans Ericka VanderLende and Alice Hill; former Big Ten medalists Jessica Mercier and Katt Miner; and standout newcomer Katelynne Hart.
Joining them in her first competition this winter will be 2020 Big Ten Indoor Championships weight throw scorer Courtney Jacobsen.
That group and more will compete in a women-only session beginning at 10 a.m., which is expected to conclude at noon. A men-only session will follow at 1:30 p.m., in order to keep crowd density and exposure points within the facility to a minimum.
Spectators will not be allowed into the facility as a precautionary measure and to allow for more room for participants from separate teams to space themselves out within the building.
Fans will be able to follow along with a live stream of the action. Regular updates also will be provided via live results and the official social media channels of Michigan track and field.
Featured Events
• 600 meters (11:15 a.m.) -- One week after setting the NCAA lead at a Michigan-first-year-record 1:29.27 over the 600-meter distance and stunning the social media world in her viral 4x400-meter relay anchor leg, Holman will compete in the same two events at Indiana. She will be pushed harder this week, as among those in the field is Purdue's Samara Miller, who owns a 1:28.55 best from her fourth-place finish at Big Tens in 2018. Last week was her first-ever 600-meter run, giving her a measure of experience heading into her second effort.
• Pole Vault (10:15 a.m.) -- After busting off the rust from a missed 2020 season, 2019 Big Ten Outdoor silver medalist Mercier will square off for the second weekend in a row with former conference champions Sophia Franklin of Michigan State and Anna Watson of Indiana, as well as 2020 indoor silver medalist Jessica Bray of Purdue. Joining Mercier in what will be her Michigan debut is Morgan Flynn, who also is expected to challenge for a Big Ten top-eight finish.
• High Jump (10:40 a.m.) -- Reigning Big Ten Indoor bronze medalist Miner will look to rekindle her 2020 form in a rematch with Purdue's Alexis Zatta, who won last week's Simmons-Harvey Invitational over her and teammate Jada Wimberly.
• Mile (10:20 a.m.) and 3,000 meters (11 a.m.) -- The performances in these events may help show the potential of the cross country team when it returns to the Hoosier state a week later for the Big Ten Championships in Shelbyville, Ind., on Jan. 30. VanderLende, Hill, Hart and Kathryn House headline the mile competition among others, while the 3,000 features up-and-comers Jena Metwalli, Samantha Tran, Kayla Windemuller and Raquel Powers.

Team Outlook

• Returning All-Americans: Alice Hill (distance medley relay), Aurora Rynda (distance medley relay), Ericka VanderLende (cross country)
• Returning Individual Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers: Rynda (600 meters champion), VanderLende (3,000 meters), Katt Miner (high jump), Briana Nelson (weight throw), Mercier (pole vault), Courtney Jacobsen (weight throw), Hill (mile), Kathryn House (5,000 meters), Amber Gall (800 meters)
• Current school record-holders: Nelson (weight throw), Hill and Rynda (distance medley relay); Emma Lane (indoor 4x400 relay)
• As always, the Wolverine women will be a force to be reckoned with in the distance events. Michigan counts three All-Americans among its ranks in the longer races, including two-time DMR honorees Hill and Rynda and cross country honoree VanderLende. Rynda will be aiming for a third-straight 600-meter Big Ten title while growing into a national-caliber 800-meter runner, having qualified for NCAAs in 2020 at that distance but instead opted to enter in the DMR. VanderLende will look to improve on a strong bronze-medal debut at Big Ten Indoors in 2020, and Hill is striving to score in her third-straight Big Ten Indoor mile final.
• The Wolverines' distance corps will get significant reinforcement with the addition of Katelynne Hart, who was a national champion miler and a two-time national runner-up two-miler in high school.
• A year after shredding the U-M weight throw record book, both school-record-holder Nelson and No. 2 all-time thrower Jacobsen return for another season in the ring. The pair finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in 2020, and are poised more in 2021.
• The U-M jumps group is led by a pair of Big Ten medalists in 2019 outdoor pole vault silver medalist Mercier and 2020 indoor high jump bronze medalist Miner. Mercier is back after sitting out the 2020 campaign, while Miner was granted a medical hardship waiver this fall that gave her one more chase at a run at the event title in 2021. Miner alos will get another chance at qualifying for nationals after just missing in 2020 by a few spots on the descending order list.
• Though the sprints squad lost All-Americans Jade Harrison and Chloe Foster, as well as Julia Hall, the Wolverines will be bolstered by a strong incoming class of talent. Chief among that group is Ziyah Holman, a high school national champion in the 400 meters and a U20 world record-holder in the 4x400 relay. Also joining the group is Eastern Michigan transfer Hanna Hearn, whose career bests would put her among the best in U-M history in the 60 meters.
