STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team lost a tough 2-1 battle at Penn State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 10) at Jeffrey Field. The Wolverines played with just 10 men for the final 20 minutes due to a red card.
The Wolverines (5-5-2, 2-2-1 Big Ten) came back to tie the game in the 58th minute on a Marc Ybarra penalty kick that was drawn by Derick Broche. However, a late own goal allowed Penn State (8-3-1, 4-0-0 Big Ten) to earn the victory over the Maize and Blue.
Michigan pushed all match, totaling 17 shots with five on frame, while keeper Hayden Evans made four saves in goal.
U-M had a shot early from Inaki Rodriguez when he had a low ball that was picked up by PSU keeper before the Wolverines fired back-to-back shots with one reaching frame in the 25th minute. Rodriguez made some fancy moves around defenders into the 18-yard box but had the ball poked away before he could fire a shot just minutes later.
U-M totaled 10 shots in the opening 45 minutes with three reaching goal, but the teams headed to the locker room scoreless at the halftime break.
Once again, Evans was tested early in the half and came up with an important save, but Penn State lit up the scoreboard less than a minute later on its next possession to take a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.
In the 58th minute, Broche took the ball in the 18-yard box and was taken down, earning a penalty kick. Ybarra took the kick for the Wolverines and caught the PSU keeper leaning and put the ball into the bottom-right corner to knot the score at 1.
Following a U-M red card, an own goal swung the lead back into the hands of Penn State in the 70th minute. Evan Rasmussen looked to have found the tying goal in the 78th minute as his shot beat the keeper, but a Nittany Lion defender was able to save the ball off his back and maintain the Penn State lead.
Michigan could not sneak any shots past the Nittany Lions in the closing minutes.
The Wolverines will be back in action Friday (Oct. 15) at 7 p.m. when it plays host to Wisconsin at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
