COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Sofia Southam took advantage of a flurry in front of the cage to score the game's lone goal early in the second half and propel the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 1-0 win at No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3) at Buckeye Varsity Field.
Southam, the nation's leading scorer, broke through at the 36:21 mark with her 14th goal of the season. Junior Nina Apoola intercepted a pass at the Ohio State 25 to initiate the surge into the circle. Apoola pushed the ball up, where freshman Abby Tamer battled for possession near the right post, pulling the goalkeeper out, and whipped a pass across the goalmouth. Southam lunged in front to knock the ball into the open cage.
Southam boasts four game-winning goals this season and has scored in all seven of her appearances.
Michigan (9-0, 2-0 Big Ten) largely dominated possession, outshooting the Buckeyes 16-3 and outcornering them 8-1. Ohio State (6-4, 1-1 Big Ten) registered all of its offensive stats in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Michigan blocked the initial shot off the OSU corner at the top of the circle before the second attempt missed wide.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker did not face a shot on goal en route to the Wolverines' fourth shutout this season and her second complete-game shutout. She now shares the second spot among U-M's career shutout leaders with Laure Pieri (20, 1976-79). Ohio State's Aaliyah Hernandez stopped 10 of 11 U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines will host a pair of top-10 opponents next weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field, kicking off the homestand with a 6 p.m. slate against Northwestern at 6 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 8) before welcoming Louisville in their non-conference finale at noon on Sunday (Oct. 10). Admission is free to all regular-season home games at Ocker Field. Both games also will be streamed live on B1G+.
