ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Anouk Veen scored at the 72:18 mark, converting on a double-overtime penalty corner, to propel the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 decision over No. 6 Northwestern on Friday evening (Oct. 8) in front of 645 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines improved to 10-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten Conference play.
It was Michigan's first overtime of the season, and the Wildcats largely controlled most of it with a 4-0 advantage in shots over the first extra frame. U-M's goal followed its first push into the Northwestern circle; the Wolverines earned a corner on referral and Veen buried it for her first goal of the season.
U-M worked the ball around the scoring arc, left to right, before senior Katie Anderson stopped it, and Veen stepped into one, skipping it low and through the goalkeeper's legs for the game-winner.
The Wolverines led for much of the contest after converting on their first corner opportunity, at 6:40, in the first quarter. Senior Kathryn Peterson inserted then was in perfect position near the left post to bang in the rebound off the goalie's pads. It was her second goal of the season.
Northwestern (6-4, 1-3 Big Ten) answered on a corner of its own early in the fourth quarter, at 47:34, and was nearly identical to Peterson's marker. Senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker made the first save, but the rebound kicked left, and the Wildcat inserter knocked it into the open cage.
Spieker was outstanding in the contest, posting a season-high nine saves -- and none more impressive than four in a row during a Northwestern flurry in the final 20 seconds of regulation. The Wildcats followed the barrage with a penalty corner; the initial shot was blocked and the rebound missed wide to send the game to overtime.
Michigan was outshot for the first time this season, with Northwestern posting an 18-11 advantage, while penalty corners were even at 8-8. Northwestern goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz posted six saves on U-M's eight shots on goal.
The Wolverines wrap up the weekend homestand with their final non-conference slate of the season, hosting No. 3 Louisville at noon at Ocker Field. Admission is free to all regular-season home games, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
