ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team scored the first 14 points of the game, set season highs in multiple offensive categories and led by as many as 50 points in a 93-54 win over Akron on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 5) at Crisler Center.
U-M was firing on all cylinders offensively, scoring a season-high 93 points on 64.7 percent (33-for-51) shooting from the field and 60 percent (6-for-10) from three-point range. Senior Emily Kiser scored a career-best 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while grabbing eight boards and totaling four assists. Classmate Naz Hillmon had 18 points and five assists, with junior Michelle Sidor turning in 12 points. Freshman Laila Phelia had 11 points in her first career start, with senior Leigha Brown chipping in 10 points off the bench.
Michigan totaled a season-best 22 assists, with junior Maddie Nolan handing out a career-high seven to go with eight points.
Michigan raced out to a 14-0 lead in the contest, keeping the Zips off the scoreboard for nearly the first six minutes of the game. Phelia hit a triple on Michigan's first possession with the shot clock winding down, followed by a steal-and-score in transition from Sidor.
Hillmon accounted for four points during the run, with Sidor hitting a triple and Phelia scoring off the bounce as an Akron timeout at the 5:38 mark did not deter the run. The Zips finally got on the board with a free throw at the 4:13 mark of the first quarter.
U-M held the Zips to just four points and one field goal in the first quarter, tied for the fifth-best defensive quarter in program history, and the Wolverines led 25-4 after 10 minutes.
It was much of the same in the second quarter as the Maize and Blue scored 30 points in the period, sending it to the half with a 55-21 lead. Michigan's 55 points are tied for the 12th most in a half and the most since equaling that total on Dec. 21, 2017, against Delaware State.
The Wolverines outscored Akron 19-7 in the third quarter for a 74-28 lead after 30 minutes. Kiser scored 10 points in the frame to outscore Akron on her own.
Michigan's lead ballooned to 50 points in the early stages of the fourth, as all 13 Wolverines who saw the court found the scoring column.
Michigan kicks off Big Ten action next, heading to Madison to face Wisconsin on Thursday (Dec. 9) at 8 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
