
Michigan Comes Up Short Against No. 2 Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to No. 2-ranked Maryland 18-12 on Saturday (April 10) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Junior attackman Bryce Clay scored a team high three goals, while junior faceoff specialist Nick Rowlett totaled 12 ground balls and a goal.
Sophomore attackman Josh Zawada contributed five points to the effort, putting two goals in the back of the net, while adding three assists. Junior goalie John Kiracofe had a strong showing in the net, totaling nine saves on the day.
Michigan (2-6, 2-6 Big Ten) took a lead early in the game, scoring five unanswered goals to start the contest. Graduate student Avery Myers kicked off the scoring, followed by goals from freshman Michael Boehm, graduate student Tyler Papa, and two goals from Clay. The five-goal lead Michigan had built was the largest deficit Maryland has faced all season. Two Terps goals cut the Michigan lead to three, as the Wolverines led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Maryland, as it held the Wolverines scoreless until the end of the half, while tallying seven goals. The nine-goal Terrapins run gave them a 9-5 lead going into the half.
Maryland continued its run into the second half, holding the Wolverines scoreless until the 1:09 mark at the end of the third quarter. Michigan answered back with an Avery Myers goal, Michigan's first since the first quarter, to make the score 16-6. Rowlett tacked on a goal of his own right before the end of the quarter, sending the Wolverines into the final quarter on a two goal run and trailing 16-7.
Michigan won the fourth quarter 5-2 with goals from Zawada, Clay, Boehm, and sophomore Jacob Jackson, but the comeback fell short, with Zawada scoring the final goal of the game at the 2:47 mark.
The Maize and Blue converted on all three of its extra man opportunities, and were 16-for-18 on clears. The Wolverines tied their season low in turnovers with 10, and won the ground ball battle 26-25.
U-M will head to State College, Pa., to take on Penn State on Friday (April 16) at 5 p.m. The final road contest of the 2021 regular season will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
