STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell 14-13 in overtime against Penn State on Friday (April 16) at Panzer Stadium.
Penn State's Mac O' Keefe netted the game-winner in overtime with three seconds to go after setting the NCAA career-goals record (217) earlier in the matchup.
The Nittany Lions took an early 2-0 lead, but U-M's Kyle Stephenson (7:57) and Tyler Papa (6:18) answered back to knot the contest at 2. Following another Penn State (3-6, 3-6 Big Ten) marker, Michigan junior Bryce Clay knotted the score at 4:31 as the contest was tied at 4.
Following a PSU goal seconds into the second quarter, U-M rattled off three scores -- two coming from freshman Michael Boehm and one from sophomore Josh Zawada on an extra-man chance to give the Wolverines a 6-4 lead.
Penn State cut the lead to a goal at 7:33 with a bit of history, as O' Keefe scored the 213th goal of his career, breaking the NCAA record for goals in a career. O' Keefe added another with 3:19 to go in the second, but Boehm marked his third of the half with 12 ticks to get as U-M led 7-6 heading into the half.
Coming out of the break, Penn State knotted the score at 7 at the 13:38 mark before the Wolverines went on a 3-0 run keyed by scores from Bonomi, McCurry and Clay to retake the lead, 10-7. PSU answered back with O'Keefe's fourth of the day to cut the lead to 10-8, but goals from graduate student Avery Myers and a longpole marker from sophomore Ryan Schriber with 38 seconds left made it 12-9.
PSU then went on a 5-0 run from late in the fourth to the 5:27 portion of the quarter to take a 13-12 lead. Michigan (2-7, 2-7 Big Ten), trailing by a goal, equalized at 2:33 on a rip from up top from sophomore Jacob Jackson. The two sides played even the rest of regulation and headed to overtime.
O'Keefe's sixth of the day with three seconds left in the extra session was the difference and gave the Nittany Lions the 14-13 win.
Boehm led U-M with three goals, all in the first half, while Zawada marked four points (one goal, three assists). Junior face-off man Nick Rowlett went 15-for-30 at the dot and added eight ground balls, while junior goalie John Kiracofe made seven stops in net.
