ORLANDO, Fla. -- Freshman Kari Miller of the University of Michigan women's tennis team used a four-game run in the first set and a timely break in the second set to wrap up a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 13-ranked Victoria Flores of Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Sunday morning (May 23) at the USTA National Campus.
The players exchanged breaks to start the first set before settling in over the next several games.
Flores broke Miller on the deuce point for a 4-2 lead when Miller netted a backhand, but the advantage was short-lived as Miller broke right back to put the set back on serve at 4-3. Miller did her part in the next game, holding serve for a 4-4 score.
The Wolverine, ranked No. 57, broke Flores at love in the next game, giving herself a 5-4 lead and the opportunity to serve out the set in the ensuing game. It was all Miller in the next game as she once again won at love to wrap up the first set on the strength of a four-game run.
The second set started much like the first, as neither player held serve over the first five games. Miller took a 3-2 lead on the final break of serve and consolidated the break in the next game, winning when Flores put a forehand in the net for a 4-2 U-M lead.
Both players held serve over the next three games, sending Miller back to the line to serve for the match at 5-4. Miller won all four points, wrapping up the match on a netted forehand from Flores.
Miller advances to the NCAA second round, which will be held Monday (May 24). She will face Duke's Georgia Drummy for a chance at the Round of 16.
