LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split a Saturday (May 29) doubleheader against No. 20-ranked Nebraska as the Wolverines claimed a 2-0 win in the opener before the Cornhuskers held on for a 5-3 victory in the nightcap at Haymarket Park.
The series schedule was altered Saturday morning and changed to a doubleheader based on Sunday's weather forecast.
Michigan took a superbly-played opener, breaking through with a run in the fourth inning as Tito Flores walked to lead off and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Griffin Mazur.
Flores was in the middle of the next inning as well, roping an RBI single into left-center to score Clark Elliott, who singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
The Wolverines received another tremendous pitching effort from Cameron Weston (7-3), who allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out four and consistently inducing weak contact to the tune of seven shutout innings. Willie Weiss earned his fifth save, yielding just an infield single against two strikeouts to finish the game.
For a second consecutive game, Flores was the lone player to log two hits as he continues his impressive play.
In game two, Nebraska took a 4-0 lead thanks to a clunky third inning when a questionable leadoff walk was followed by a wild pitch and three consecutive soft singles that led to three runs.
Michigan threatened in the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Nebraska reliever Shay Schanaman got a strikeout on a 2-2 slider to end the threat.
The Huskers padded their lead in the eighth on a solo homer by Max Anderson.
Michigan got on the board in the ninth when Christian Molfetta drove home Mazur (single) with a two-out RBI single to left. Jimmy Obertop followed with a line-drive home run to force Nebraska to the bullpen in a 5-3 game. Spencer Schwellenbach came on to end the threat ad the game.
Ben Dragani took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits (three singles) in three innings of work. Isaiah Paige and Joe Pace provided impressive relief with the duo recording seven strikeouts in three innings of work.
With the regular season completed, the Wolverines await their postseason fate with the NCAA Selection Show on Monday (May 31) at noon on ESPN2.
