ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team will conclude its 2021 regular season in Ann Arbor with the B1G Len Paddock Open and Senior Day on Saturday (May 8) -- its first competition within the confines of the U-M Track and Field Stadium in 736 days.
With the Big Ten Championships just over a week away in Champaign, Ill., on May 14-16, the Wolverines will use this opportunity for many on the roster to get one last tune-up before the conference meet against contingents from Michigan State and Indiana.
Field events begin at 2 p.m., and action on the track gets underway an hour later at 3 p.m. The meet is projected to conclude around 6 p.m., at which point a ceremony will begin to honor 18 women and 14 men who have either graduated or exhausted their eligibility.
Among those expected to compete for the Wolverines include All-Americans Andrew Liskowitz (shot put, discus), John Meyer (shot put, discus), Ayden Owens (discus) and Vail Hartman (400 meters); as well as standouts Roland Amarteifio (400-meter hurdles), Dubem Amene (200 meters), Heath Baldwin (110-meter hurdles, discus), Anthony Berry (800 meters), Cassidy Henshaw (high jump), Cole Johnson (800 meters), Mason Mahacek (shot put, discus), Job Mayhue (110-meter hurdles) and Oli Raimond (mile).
In-person attendance for spectators is limited only to those individuals on the pre-approved pass list. Spectators from visiting teams and the general public will not be permitted.
Fans can follow along with the action by way of live results from Delta Timing and updates will also be provided via the team's official social media accounts.
Notes and Outlook
• Saturday will mark just the second-ever competition at the U-M Track and Field Stadium. The only other competition was the 2019 edition of the Len Paddock Open.
• With the Big Ten Outdoor Championships fast approaching, the Wolverines have shown so far in 2021 that they will bring a balanced approach to the conference meet. In the 21 events contested at the meet, Michigan has competitors ranked top-10 in 14 of them. Michigan looks particularly deep in the steeplechase with four of the top nine in the conference, while it has three of the top 10 in the 10,000 meters, 110-meter hurdles and the decathlon. The Wolverines have at least two in the top-10 in four other events.
• Christian Hubaker (8:44.84) and Joost Plaetinck (8:49.35) lead the second-deepest steeplechase corps in the country, per the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Event Squad Rankings. Hubaker and Plaetinck became just the second Michigan duo to both break 8:50 in one meet, and they were joined by Austin Remick to become the first trio in school history to run faster than 9:00 in the same competition.
• Only slightly behind the steeplechase group in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings is the 110-meter hurdles crew, which ranks fourth nationally. Both Josh Zeller at 13.72 (+2.2m/s) and Ayden Owens at 13.88 (+2.9m/s) have broken 14.00, which is exactly where Job Mayhue stands at present. They are on a collision course with the No. 1 Iowa and No. 3 Nebraska groups at Big Tens.
• In terms of shot-put duos, very few schools in the country have it better than Michigan with five-time All-American Andrew Liskowitz and All-American John Meyer. They are ranked Nos. 1 and 5 in the conference this spring, respectively, and Nos. 3 and 24 nationally, respectively. Only Southern California and North Dakota State join Michigan with multiple top-25 shot putters. Both men will be in action Saturday.
