EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team received another excellent starting pitching performance, this time from Cameron Weston, as it defeated Michigan State by a score of 3-1 on Saturday (May 8) at McLane Stadium.
Weston (5-2) gave Michigan (23-11, 23-11 Big Ten) its second exceptional effort of the series on the mound as the sophomore righty plowed through the Spartans lineup to the tune of nine strikeouts and 13 ground ball outs in a complete-game one-hitter while allowing just one hit and one run to earn the win. Weston at one point retired 20 consecutive batters before hitting a batter with two outs in the eighth inning.
That effort followed Steven Hajjar, who on Friday night (May 7) allowed one hit and one walk against 13 strikeouts over six innings in Michigan's 5-1 win in the series opener.
Benjamin Sems started the scoring in the second inning when he took the second pitch he saw high over the right-field wall for a solo homer. Ted Burton then sent a 3-2 slider back up the middle to score Griffin Mazur (single) to make it 2-0.
MSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a leadoff double, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Another home run to lead off an inning regained a two-run margin for Michigan as Tito Flores hit a rocket over the left-field wall to start the seventh inning.
For Sems and Flores, the long balls marked their third homers in the past five contests as the Wolverines made the most of their five hits.
The Wolverines and Spartans will conclude their weekend series Sunday (May 9) in a 1 p.m. start at McLane Stadium. The finale will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
