ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 24th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team outshot USC 21-12 and had an 11-4 shots-on-goal advantage, but fell 1-0 to the Trojans in overtime Friday (Sept. 3) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The lone goal of the match came in the 94th minute on a header from USC's Aaliyah Farmer.
Michigan (4-1) survived an early flurry from USC (2-2), as the Trojans had a trio of chances around the nine-minute mark. However, the Wolverines answered back with two prime efforts off the head of senior Skylar Anderson, the first coming off a corner kick in the 13th minute and on a set piece at the far post that was stopped two minutes later.
Senior Sarah Stratigakis was at the center of the ensuing Wolverine tries, the first coming in the 28th minute just inside the 18-yard box. With her back to the goal, she executed a turnaround shot and went near post, but the well-placed ball was stopped.
In the 39th minute, junior Dani Wolfe was taken down inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Wolverines. Stratigakis stepped to the spot and sent a low shot that was stopped by USC goalkeeper Anna Smith diving to her left. Smith spilled a rebound in front of the goal mouth, but the follow-up shot by junior Hannah Blake also was stopped.
With a minute left in the opening half, senior Nicki Hernandez was fouled at the top-left side of the box. Junior Lily Farkas attempted to bend a right-footed shot in, but it went into the arms of Smith, who had eight stops in the first half.
With just over 15 minutes to play in regulation, U-M led the shot category 16-6. The Wolverines nearly found a breakthrough on a Hernandez strike in transition from 30 yards out. Her off-balance shot seemed destined for the goal, but the attempt was saved by Smith sprawling to her left.
The match then headed into extra time, where USC had four chances in the opening three minutes. The Trojans found the breakthrough on a corner, where a Jada Talley service from the right touchline found the head of Farmer for the match-winner.
