Second Quarter Propels Michigan Past Wisconsin for Fourth Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team outscored Wisconsin 25-5 in the second quarter, including 12-0 run to end the half, running away with an 83-44 win over the Badgers on Thursday evening (Jan. 20) at Crisler Center. With the win, Michigan is off to its best start in program history at 16-2.
Naz Hillmon recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. Leigha Brown turned in 11 points, five assists and three steals, with Cameron Williams scoring a career-best 10 points while snaring five boards. Michigan shot 53.6 percent from the floor (30-for-56) and held Wisconsin to just 33.3 percent shooting (18-for-54). U-M won the battle on the glass 43-19 while recording 10 steals.
Michigan held Wisconsin scoreless for nearly four minutes at the end of the first quarter, taking a 19-12 lead after 10 minutes. Michigan forced seven turnovers in the period and got seven points from Hillmon for the seven-point lead.
The Wolverines opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run, six from Hillmon and two from Laila Phelia, as Wisconsin used a timeout as Michigan's lead swelled to 13, 27-14, with 7:12 on the second-quarter clock.
The timeout did little to deter the Wolverines, who scored 17 of the next 20 points -- including the final 12 of the quarter -- to build a commanding 44-17 halftime lead. Michigan made 11-of-17 shots in the period while holding Wisconsin to just 2-for-11 from the floor. Hillmon and Williams each scored six points in the period, as Hillmon led the way for the Wolverines at the half with 13 points in 13 minutes.
The Wolverines won the third quarter 19-15 behind five points from Nolan and four each from Hillmon, Emily Kiser and Elise Stuck. Michigan pushed its lead to 30 for the first time, 56-26, on a Stuck basket with 2:57 to go in the quarter. Nolan connected on a deep triple from the top of the key as time expired, giving U-M a 63-32 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan again won the next 10 minutes, outscoring UW 20-12 in the final period. The Wolverines led by as many as 43 in the final quarter en route to their fourth straight win.
Michigan completes a two-game homestand on Monday (Jan. 24), hosting Purdue at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
