ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team secured a Big Ten victory over No. 3 Nebraska by a 409.100-400.350 score on Saturday (Jan. 29) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (8-0, 1-0 Big Ten) won three events on the afternoon, with sophomore Javier Alfonso clinching the still rings title with a career-high tally of 14.35. Fellow sophomore Evgeny Siminiuc took home the parallel bars and high bar event titles with scores of 14.30 and 14.40, respectively. Siminiuc's high-bar score also was a career high.
Michigan marked season-high scores on four events: floor exercise (68.750), still rings (70.000), parallel bars (68.700) and high bar (66.800). The Wolverines also took home their highest team score of the season with a final tally of 409.100.
Graduate student Jacob Moore finished in the top three on three events, scoring a 14.25 (second) on floor exercise, a 13.70 (third) on pommel horse and a 14.350 (third) on vault. Junior Paul Juda also finished in the top three on three events with marks of 14.30 (tie for second) on still rings, 14.20 (third) on parallel bars and 13.85 (second) on high bar.
The Wolverines hit 80 percent of their routines (24-of-30), including perfect performances on floor exercise and still rings.
Nebraska (3-3, 0-1 Big Ten) started off the afternoon strong, winning individual event titles on floor exercise and pommel horse, but U-M's depth prevailed and led it to the victory.
Junior David Willett, the lone competitor in the all-around, scored a 78.550.
Following a bye week, the Wolverines will hit the road, traveling to Columbus to take on Ohio State on Saturday (Feb. 12) at 1 p.m..
