ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used timely goals and stingy defense to complete a perfect home weekend, blanking No. 5 Iowa 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16) in front of 622 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' fifth straight win and their third against a ranked opponent this season.
Michigan (9-4, 4-2 Big Ten) largely controlled the entirety of the game, outshooting the Hawkeyes 21-3 and outcornering them 10-3. The Wolverines earned back-to-back shutouts this weekend -- after also holding Indiana to just three shots on Friday (Oct. 14) -- and boasts six shutouts on the season.
Graduate student Tina D'Anjolell opened scoring late in the first half, at the 27:54 mark, after a good bounce in front and strong finish. Sophomore/freshman Claire Taylor sent a hard sweep into the circle from outside the Iowa 25, and the ball hit a Hawkeyes defender in front and got through her. D'Anjolell, camped out right behind her, lunged to chip it in to the right side of the cage. It was her third goal of the season and second of the weekend.
The Wolverines added insurance early in the fourth quarter, at 46:57, on a rebound in front from junior Lora Clarke. U-M fed the ball into the circle from the right side and it bounced to sophomore Abby Tamer, who put a point-blank shot on goal right in front. The ball rebounded high off the Iowa (10-5, 3-4 Big Ten) goalkeeper, and Clarke batted it out of the air and in for her ninth of the season to tie Tamer for the Michigan team lead.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned three saves -- two off Iowa's penalty corners and another on a hard reverse shot from the arc in the first quarter. Iowa's Grace McGuire earned 10 saves, while the Hawkeyes added a defensive save on a U-M corner in the third quarter.
The Wolverines will travel to Evanston, Ill., next weekend for a pair of games and their final road trip of the regular season. Michigan will face defending NCAA champion Northwestern at 3 p.m. CDT on Friday (Oct. 21) before a non-conference rematch against Iowa at 11:30 a.m. CDT on Sunday (Oct. 23). Both games will be played on the Wildcats' Lakeside Field.
