ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Tom Brady ran to a fourth-place individual finish as part of a group of four top-15 finishers to lead the No. 29-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team to a runner-up showing at the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Oct. 28) at U-M Golf Course.
No. 9 Wisconsin captured the conference title (25 points), with the Wolverines (57), Indiana (89), Michigan State (89) and Purdue (156) rounding out the top five, respectively.
Brady was the top finisher for the Wolverines, completing the eight-kilometer course in 23:52.3 -- only a few seconds off a personal best. He had a strong race throughout, never dropping below fourth place and staying in the top three for most of the race.
U-M had three other finishers in the top 15, led by junior Zach Stewart (eighth, 24:06.3), senior Nick Foster (12th, 24:18.1) and graduate student Arjun Jha (13th, 24:18.7). With their performances, all three runners earned second team All-Big Ten honors, with Stewart doing so with a career-best time.
Junior Jack Spamer who was the fifth Wolverine to cross the finish line, also set a new career-best time at 24:44.9. Freshman Luke Venhuizen finished 35th overall in his first Big Ten race.
The Wolverines came out fast, trying to take control of the race early and putting pressure on the rest fof the field. After the first mile, Michigan had eight racers in the top 15 and five of the top six. The top 44 racers were separated by just three seconds with that gap widening throughout the race to 36 seconds at the three-mile mark and 1:19 by the finish.
With the conference title decided, the Maize and Blue shifts it focus to national competition. In two weeks, the Wolverines will be in Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 11.
