After killing off the remainder of a five-minute yellow early in overtime, the Wolverines largely controlled play, putting back-to-back shots on net and earning a corner. But UAlbany got behind the defense en route to its game-winner, picking up the ball at midfield and lofting a long pass up the field to earn the breakaway. Sophia Schoonmaker finished on the play to score the winning goal at 69:02.
U-M outshot the Great Danes, 22-10, with nine shots on goal. Graduate student Tina D'Anjolell scored Michigan's lone goal in the closing minute of the first half of action, while fifth-year Kathryn Peterson earned the assist on the goal. Goalie Anna Spieker made two saves in the cage for the Wolverines.
Michigan put the pressure on in the final half of the second quarter as it recorded two corners and a penalty stroke before it earned its third corner of the quarter in the final 20 seconds of the half. D'Anjolell sent the ball to the top of the circle as Michigan worked the ball around the circle back to D'Anjolell, who fired the ball from the left side as it deflected into the top right corner of the goal to allow U-M to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Michigan outshot UAlbany 7-5 in the first 30 minutes of action with four shots on goal.
U-M came out of the halftime break with four straight shots to continue putting pressure on the Great Dane defense. Abby Tamer looked to give the Wolverines the two-goal advantage in the final minute of the third quarter but a huge save from the UAlbany goalie kept the Michigan advantage to just one in the third quarter of action.
The Great Danes found an offensive push in the fourth quarter as it earned four straight corners with Spieker making a big save on the third attempt.
Tamer again rushed down the field and got the ball up to Sarah Pyrtek, who fired a shot that went off the goalies' helmet as Michigan maintained the 1-0 advantage with seven minutes left to play.
A yellow card on U-M that was followed by a Great Dane penalty corner led to the game-tying goal in the final three minutes of play as the two teams would head into overtime deadlocked at 1-1.
Michigan found opportunities early in the overtime period but it was UAlbany who scored the game-winner in the 69th minute to earn the 2-1 victory over the Wolverines.
