
Muir Scores 100th Career Goal as Michigan Defeats Arizona State

PONTIAC, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned an 11-9 victory over Arizona State on Friday night (Feb. 18) at the UWM Sports Complex.
Fifth-year Caitlin Muir scored four goals, the last of which was the 100th of her career. Muir is the fourth Wolverine to reach the 100-goal mark, joining Kim Coughlan (124), Jess Angerman (111) and Anna Schueler (109).
Along with her four goals, Muir added two assists for a total of six points, while Caroline Davis recorded a hat trick and added an assist. Julia Schwabe was the final multi-goal scorer for U-M with two on the evening.
Michigan won the draw 13-11 with Kaitlyn Mead winning six draws on the day, while Annabelle Burke had three.
Defensively, Katherine Galzerano picked up four ground balls, while goalie Arielle Weissman had three. In the cage, Weissman made five saves.
Michigan took a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the first quarter, but Arizona State answered with its first of the night with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening stanza. Muir netted her first of the game in the final two minutes of the first quarter, giving U-M an early 3-1 advantage.
ASU scored back-to-back goals to close out the second quarter as the Wolverines and Sun Devils headed into the halftime break tied at 4.
Coming out of halftime, Muir and Arizona State's Taylor Pinzone exchanged goals to knot the score at 6 as the teams headed into the final 15 minutes.
Michigan and ASU exchanged goals to start the fourth quarter before Davis collected back-to-back goals, including a free-position goal to put U-M ahead 9-7 with 9:08 left to play. Arizona came within one just one minute later, but a Schwabe rip brought the lead back to two with just over five minutes to play.
The Wolverine defense locked in and gave up just one final goal and the U-M offense tacked on one insurance goal from Caroline Bean with 2:19 left to secure the victory.
U-M will conclude its weekend on Sunday (Feb.20) when it travels to Cincinnati for a 1 p.m. contest against the Bearcats.
