NEW ORLEANS, La. -- With senior Ashley Lau rallying to earn co-medalist honors and three Wolverines among the top 10 individually, the University of Michigan women's golf team began its spring season with a runner-up finish at the Tulane Classic Tuesday (Feb. 15) after posting an 903 team total at the English Turn Golf Club.
With the second-place finish, U-M has now posted back-to-back runner-up finishes after closing the fall as the runner-up at the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 29-31). Lau's individual title is the second for the Maize and Blue after junior Mikaela Schulz shared medalist honors in the Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 13-14).
"I'm so proud of how we battled throughout this week," said U-M assistant coach AJ Newell, who filled in while head coach Jan Dowling is on maternity leave. "We showed a lot of patience and resolve fighting until the very end. It's a great way to start our spring and we will continue to build off everything we learned this week and keep getting better.
"Ashley battled through tough conditions to take home the individual victory. She hit the ball great and gave herself a lot of good opportunities and we are so happy for her to get that second trophy."
Following Lau's lead in the first round, she led U-M with an opening 74 in Sunday's first round, while sophomore Monet Chun carded a 76 as U-M opened with a 308 tally and position itself second of the 17-team field. With the return of graduate student Ashley Kim, who missed the fall season with a thumb injury, her even-par 72 and junior Hailey Borja's 74 (+2) helped the Wolverines improve eight shots and posted a 300 second-round tally to remain in the second spot behind 36-hole leader North Texas.
Heading to the final round, Lau carded one of two final round 71s (-1), while Borja added a second 74 (+2) and Chun posted a second 76, as the Maize and Blue were one of two teams to crack 300 with a final round 296. With a 903 total, the Wolverines closed just eight shots back of champion North Texas (895).
With her 221 total, Lau (74-76-71) jumped four spots in the final round to share medalist honors with North Texas' Patricia Sinolungan (76-69-76/221). The hardware is the second of Lau's career after she shared medalist honors at the 2021 Indiana Invitational (212, -4).
Kim posted her 10th career top-10 finish, tying for sixth with a 226 54-hole total. After an opening 80, Borja bounced back with back-to-back 74s to post her eighth top-10 finish, tying for ninth at 227 and giving the Wolverines three among the top 10 for the second time this season (Wolverine Invitational). Chun gave U-M four in the top 25 as she tied for 24th (76-82-75/233). Playing as an individual, Schulz was 23rd at 232 (81-79-72).
The Wolverines make a return trip to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Gators Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6). The last time U-M played in Florida's event was in 2020 when the Maize and Blue finished third after Kim paced U-M tying for third (213). The event was the last for the Wolverines before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
