ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In the final weekend of competition ahead of the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the University of Michigan women's track and field team will host the Silverston Invitational on Friday (Feb. 18) before sending a select crew to Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational to chase qualifying times on Saturday (Feb. 19).
Historically a competition that has served as a last-chance tune-up for select student-athletes, a more complete group of Michigan women -- headlined by members of the pole vault squad that made history in Chicago this past weekend, sprint/hurdles newcomers BreeAna Bates and Aasia Laurencin, and shot putter Amanda Schaare -- is scheduled to compete at home on and around the world-class hydraulically banked 200-meter track at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
This is the last opportunity to see the Wolverines at home during the indoor season until the 2023 campaign. Both field events and preliminaries on the track begin at 4 p.m., with finals on the track scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m. All events are expected to conclude by 7:45 p.m.
The distance squad will have a relatively light workload Friday in Ann Arbor, but select Wolverines will have their work cut out for them on Saturday at Notre Dame as they look to chase qualifying times in the distance medley relay, among several other events, that could punch their ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
With a pool that includes Big Ten-champion school-record-holders Aurora Rynda and Ziyah Holman; multiple-time All-American Alice Hill; Big Ten scorer Samantha Tran; and 2021-22 standouts Kayla Windemuller and Savannah Sutherland, Michigan will be looking to approach or dip below 11:00.00 to secure their 19th trip to nationals in the past 20 years.
The relay begins at 11:40 a.m., and requires four runners to cover 4,000 meters over four legs that measure 1,200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters. Michigan could also have entrants in the 400 meters, mile and 800 meters through the early afternoon.
Live streams of the track events and all of the field events can be accessed on MGoBlue.com. Live results will be available through Delta Timing, and updates will be posted throughout the day on the official social media channels of Michigan track and field.
