ANN ARBOR -- Led by Aasia Laurencin and BreeAna Bates on Friday night (Feb. 18) in the 2022 indoor home finale Silverston Invitational, the University of Michigan women's track and field team sprints and hurdles corps is in career-best form heading into next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Bates entered into a five-way tie for the No. 2 spot in school history at 60 meters -- and a three-way tie for the all-time U-M first-year record -- just after Laurencin sliced a big chunk off her personal best to move up to No. 4 in school history.
Their victories were among six racked up by the Wolverines on the evening. They were joined atop the podium by Chika Amene at 200 meters (24.74), Lauren Fulcher at 600 meters (1:32.91), Eva Jansohn at 800 meters (2:11.46) and the 4x400 relay of Delaney Stersic, Jansohn, Lucy Petee and Fulcher.
After clocking a near-personal-record 7.45 seconds to claim the top time from the prelims, Bates topped it with a 7.42 to win in the final. The time ties her with teammate Hannah Waller and Maria Brown for the U-M first-year record, and with those two and Tiffany Ofili and Sierra Hauser-Price for No. 2 in school history overall.
Only Cindy Ofili has run faster in Michigan history with her 7.37 school record that is now within 0.05 seconds.
Ofili also tops the 60-meter hurdles list on which Laurencin now finds herself at No. 4 in school history. Like Bates, after coming within 0.01 seconds of her PR in the prelims at 8.31 seconds, she slashed a full tenth of a second off in the final to post an 8.21 performance.
Based on the descending order lists entering the weekend, she now ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten this winter, just 0.01 off conference leader Yasmin Brooks of Penn State. The time likely will rank her around 30th nationally by the end of the weekend.
Headlining the action in the field were a runner-up finish from Amanda Schaare in the shot put and a 2-3-4-5 finish in the pole vault led by Mia Manson and Brooke Tjerrild.
After its distance medley relay squad chases an NCAA Championships qualifying performance Saturday (Feb. 19) at Notre Dame, the Wolverines will head to Geneva, Ohio, for the Big Ten Indoor Championships next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26).
