
MacNeil, Freestyle Relay Win Gold as U-M Stays in Second Place at B1G Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team sits in second place heading into the final day of competition at the 2022 Big Ten Championships held at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The Wolverines have accumulated 810 points through three days.
Michigan had five of the top 12 finishers in the 100-yard butterfly, including Big Ten Champion Maggie MacNeil, who edged out teammate Olivia Carter to take podium honors with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 49.74 seconds. MacNeil won her second Big Ten title of the championship after winning the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday night (Feb. 17). Carter finished as the runner-up with an NCAA provisional time of 51.29 seconds.
In the consolation finals of the 100-yard butterfly, the Wolverines' three competitors finished second, third and fourth in the heat to place 10th, 11th and 12th in the event. Sophomore Noelle Kaufmann (52.83), freshman Natalie Kan (52.92) and junior Megan Glass (53.05) all posted NCAA provisional times to finish 10th, 11th and 12th overall in the event. The Wolverines gained 113 team points in the opening event to take the lead over Ohio State, 519.5 to 431.
In the 400-yard individual medley, the Wolverines had a pair of top-five finishers. Sophomore Kathryn Ackerman finished fourth with a time of 4:07.46, and senior Victoria Kwan placed fifth with a career-best time of 4:09.51. Ackerman and Kwan both swam NCAA provisional times as did sophomore Claire Donan, who finished 14th in 4:17.19. The Buckeyes, who started the evening with the lead, regained the advantage after the 400 IM, leading the Wolverines, 610-587.5 margin.
Junior Megan Glass represented the Maize and Blue in the 'A' final of the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in fourth place with a career-best time of 1:45.95. Sophomore Sophie Housey swam a 1:47.58 in the 'B' final to seventh in the heat and finish 15th overall among all competitors.
The team's lone competitor in the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Letitia Sim swam a personal best time of 58.76 seconds to finish in third place. Her time was a NCAA provisional time.
U-M had three swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Casey Chung swam a career-best time (52.68) to win the 'B' final and finish ninth among all competitors. Sophomore Noelle Kaufmann (53.43) and junior Mariella Venter (54.22) placed 19th and 22nd, respectively, in the 'C' final. Kaufmann's time was a career-best and NCAA provisional time.
Senior Allie Klein competed in the 'A' final of the three-meter diving, finishing seventh with a total of 335.65 points. In addition, the Wolverines had two competitors in the 'B' final, with junior Lucy Hogan posting a career-best score of 326.40 to place 10th overall, and freshman Evie Johnson finishing 13th with a score of 271.90. Klein and Hogan scored qualifying standards for the NCAA Zone Diving competition.
In the night's only relay swim, the Wolverines set a Big Ten Championship record and posted a NCAA Qualifying time of 1:26.74 in winning the Big Ten title in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The record-setting relay team consisted of Lindsay Flynn, Kan, Claire Newman and MacNeil.
The final day of competition begins Saturday (Feb. 19) with prelims at 10 a.m. CST followed by the event finals at 5:30 p.m. CST. The Wolverines will look to make up the 67 point differential (877-810) and overtake meet leader Ohio State in the final six events and the platform diving finals.
