ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four current members of the University of Michigan field hockey team and a recent graduate have been named to Junior National Teams and Development Teams for their respective countries over the last several weeks.
After a four-day selection camp held at Queens University of Charlotte, freshmen Abby Tamer and Caylie McMahon were named to the 2022 U-21 U.S. Women's National Team, while senior Kathryn Peterson and recent graduate Emma Tamer were selected for the U.S. Women's National Development Team (USWNT).
The USWNT squad accounts for the transitional phase between the junior and the senior programs. Many of the trial attendees recently completed their final college seasons and are no longer permitted to be on the U-21 team due to age restrictions.
Both U.S. teams are scheduled for a training camp Feb. 23-27 in Chula Vista, California.
Tamer led U-M freshmen with 13 points, posting four goals and five assists in the 2021 season. She is a returning member of the U.S. junior and helped contribute to Team USA's bronze-medal finish at the 2021 Junior Pan American Championship last fall.
McMahon took a medical redshirt year during the 2021 season but was named a 2019 First Team All-American by the NFHCA and Max Field Hockey during her last year of high school play. Prior to her time as a Wolverine, McMahon competed as a member of the USA U-17 National Team (2018, '19) and USA Rise Junior National Team (2020).
Peterson is a two-time NFHCA All-America third-team honoree and recorded five goals and seven assists during the 2021 fall season. She is a returning member of the U.S. Junior Team and also contributed to Team USA's bronze at the 2021 Junior Pan Am event.
Tamer garnered her first U.S. team selection after serving as an integral part of the defensive unit that held opponents to 1.29 goals per game, 7.1 shots per game and 3.4 penalty corners per game in the 2021 season.
Sophomore Rosie Hope also earned a spot on the 2022 U-21 England National Team and Great Britain Women's Elite Development Programme (EDP) squad following a two-day trial at Loughborough University in England last month.
Players on the GB EDP Squad will attend a number of upcoming training camps and be in regular contact with the senior squads through training sessions and practice matches.
Hope came back from injury after missing just over a third of the 2021 season and again contributed to the Wolverines' elite defensive unit. She also started every game in the U-M backfield as a freshman last spring. Hope previously played on both the England U-18 (2019-20) and U-16 squad (2017-18) prior to her time as a Wolverine.
