BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Aurora Rynda claimed first-team All-America honors on Saturday evening (March 12) as the University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships and for the 2022 indoor campaign at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
A two-time indoor All-American heading into the weekend as a member of Michigan's distance medley relays in 2019 and 2020, Rynda added her first-ever individual first-team honor with a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter final in 2:06.33.
Rynda was part of a chase pack behind a breakaway leader from Kennesaw State for much of the race, moving up as high as sixth place at the halfway point. She fell to eighth on the penultimate lap, and was unable to rally on the final circuit around the track, though she was able to bypass the early leader at the line.
Hers is the best finish by place for a Michigan woman in this event since Jillian Smith was the runner-up at the 2011 edition of the championships. Rynda joins Smith, Becca Addison, Geena Gall and Katie Erdman as the only Michigan women to finish top-eight in the event in school history.
With the indoor season now complete, select sprinters, jumpers and throwers will begin their 2022 outdoor campaign next Friday and Saturday (March 18-19) at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
