LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split two decisions against Louisville Sunday (March 13) as the Wolverines prevailed 16-7 in the completion of Friday's suspended game before the Cardinals clinched the series with a 13-1 win at Jim Sullivan Stadium.
Sunday's start saw the teams resume play in the top of the fifth inning with Michigan leading 13-4. Ted Burton staked the Wolverines to a first-inning lead during Friday evening's start, thanks to a two-run single before the weather worsened significantly.
Louisville scored an unearned run in the second, but Michigan responded with 10 runs on five hits in the third inning against three different UL hurlers to claim a 12-1 lead. Jimmy Obertop delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single as U-M sent 16 batters to the plate.
Louisville added an unearned run in the third and two in the fourth as a two-out fly ball was lost in blizzard-like conditions. Tito Flores and Joe Stewart made sensational diving catches on otherwise routine fly balls in the inning before the umpires finally paused the game for safety reasons.
When play resumed Sunday, Michigan stayed hot as Flores launched a solo homer to left to give the visitors a 14-4 lead. Louisville responded with three in the bottom of the frame, promising not to go away quietly. Obertop added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Jordon Rogers launched a solo shot in the eighth for a 16-7 lead.
Clark Elliott led the way offensively with a 3-for-3 game with three walks and four runs scored, while Flores and Rogers had two hits apiece. Connor O'Halloran was credited with the win despite pitching just four innings in the suspended game. The sophomore lefty was impressive as he struck out a career-high eight batters against just one walk and allowed two unearned runs. Logan Wood gave 4.0 innings of impressive relief, striking out four batters, including the side in the fifth.
Louisville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the day's regularly scheduled series finale as a critical missed ball/strike call led to a trio of first-inning runs with two outs and set the stage for a frustrating series finale for U-M.
Michigan tried to chip away as Riley Bertram laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt in the second to score Obertop, who had opened the inning with a double, but Louisville added two more runs in the second and chased U-M starter Jacob Denner in the third with a 6-1 lead before scoring twice more in the fourth and once in the fifth to take a commanding 9-1 lead en route to the win.
Obertop was the lone Wolverine with multiple hits as he connected for a double in the second and a sharp single in the fourth.
Michigan will opens its home schedule next weekend as the Wolverines host Dayton in a three-game series March 18-20. All fans 18 and under will receive free admission throughout the weekend as U-M hosts public fans for the first time since the 2019 College World Series season.
