ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior forward Naz Hillmon of the University of Michigan women's basketball team earned a spot on the Associated Press All-America first team on Wednesday (March 16), becoming the first player in program history to earn a first-team nod from the AP. She was a second-team selection last season.
"This is such an incredible honor for Naz to be recognized as one of the top players in the country," J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family head women's basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico said. "She obviously makes such an impact on the court for our program and has helped elevate Michigan women's basketball. It's not what just she does on the court, but it's also her impact in the community and her ability to continue to use her voice for change that are such a huge part of her legacy at Michigan."
Hillmon was a consensus and unanimous pick to the All-Big Ten first team earlier this month as she was the first player in program history with four first-team selections. She was also selected to the all-defensive team by both the coaches and media. She has earned first-team All-America honors this season from both The Athletic and Sports Illustrated.
Hillmon has appeared in 27 games this season, starting 26 times en route to averaging 21.0 points and 9.4 rebounds in 33.2 minutes per game. She has 14 double-doubles on the year, moving into first place on Michigan's career list with 48. She became the first player -- man or woman -- in Michigan basketball history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She is second in program history with 2,097 points and first with 1,020 boards.
She has helped Michigan to new heights this season, finishing the regular season with a 22-6 overall record and a No. 12 AP ranking. The Wolverines secured their best NCAA Tournament seed in program history (No. 3) and will be hosting the first and second rounds at Crisler this weekend.
Michigan will host No. 14-seed American Saturday (March 19) at 3:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN2. All-session tickets are $30, first-round tickets are $15 and second-round tickets are $15. Tickets may be purchased online at MGoBlue.com/tickets, by phone (734-764-0247 or 1-866-296-6849) or in person at the U-M Ticket Office (1000 S. State St.).
