CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Michigan baseball team couldn't get the hits it needed Wednesday, March 23, as the Wolverines dropped an 8-2 decision to Xavier at Hayden Field.

Jimmy Obertop staked Michigan to a first-inning lead as he laced an RBI single through the left side to score Clark Elliott, who led off the game with a single. Xavier tied the game in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-out single that capitalized on a hit batsman and a two-out walk.

Xavier took a 2-1 lead in the second inning, following another two-out dribbler through the right side against a shift.

Michigan tied the game in the third as the Wolverines loaded the bases with no outs and pushed across a run on a sharply hit double-play ball. Xavier answered again in the bottom of the frame, using a pair of one-out doubles to force Michigan to the bullpen after claiming a 4-2 lead. The Musketeers broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring four times on a wild pitch, RBI double and a wind-blown opposite field homer just over the 310-foot high wall in left.

Angelo Smith was superb in relief for Michigan with the senior lefty going 3.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Casey Buckley got the start behind the plate Wednesday and threw out three base stealers. Elliott led the way offensively with three hits while Obertop had two.

Michigan continues its travels this weekend with a Big Ten-opening series at Nebraska, March 25-27. Games on Friday and Sunday will be aired live on Big Ten Network and Saturday's game will be on BTN+.
