SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Despite out-hitting the Fighting Irish 11 hits to 10, the University of Michigan baseball team dropped a midweek game to No. 10-ranked Notre Dame Tuesday (April 12) by a score of 14-5 at Jack Klein Field.
Notre Dame scored nine runs in the first four innings -- all coming with two outs -- with five runs in the second inning and four in the fourth. On the evening, the Fighting Irish went 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position and recorded 10 two-out RBI.
Walker Cleveland (1-3) cruised through the first five ND batters before walking four straight without throwing a strike and being removed. Notre Dame capitalized as Spencer Myers hit a wind-blown grand slam down the line in left field to give the Irish a 5-0 lead.
Michigan loaded the bases in the first and second innings but came up empty. The Maize and Blue chased Notre Dame starter Jack Findlay from the game in the second to get into the Irish bullpen early in the contest.
After stranding another runner in scoring position in the third inning, Michigan got on track in the fourth as Jack Van Remortel got on base to lead off and went to third on a sizzling double from Clark Elliott. A wild pitch scored a run, and Joe Stewart laced an RBI single to center to force ND back to the bullpen in a 5-2 game.
Once again, control problems plagued Michigan pitchers in the bottom of the frame as Notre Dame scored four runs on just three hits as a leadoff walk and a pair of two-out hit batters extended the inning. The Irish added a run in the sixth on a one-out walk, stolen base, and an RBI double to left.
Michigan climbed back into the game with its vaunted offense as Elliott tripled home a run in the eighth and came home on a long home run from Ted Burton, who turned around a 95 MPH fastball for a two-run shot over the left-center field wall to make it a 10-5 game.
Working against a tiered U-M bullpen, Notre Dame added four runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game away. In total, eight Wolverine pitchers saw action in the contest.
Stewart and Elliott led all players with three hits apiece as Michigan outhit the Irish, 11-10. Burton led U-M with two RBI.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (April 15) when the Wolverines kick off a three-game Big Ten series against Michigan State. Friday's contest will take place at Jackson Field, home of the Lansing Lugnuts, with the final two games of the series taking place at McLane Stadium on the campus of MSU.
