ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team takes to the road for the first time in three weeks with short trips to Notre Dame on Tuesday (April 12) and a Big Ten Conference series against Michigan State in East Lansing over the weekend (April 15-17).
The Week That Was
• Michigan shook off a midweek loss by sweeping four-time national champion Cal State Fullerton at Ray Fisher Stadium over the weekend. The Wolverines broke an eighth-inning tie with a Matt Frey solo homer on Friday (April 8), received a complete team effort in an 8-2 rout of the visiting Titans on Saturday (April 9) and won on a walk-off ninth-inning wild pitch on Sunday (April 10).
• In its Friday night win, Michigan received another impressive effort from sophomore left-hander Connor O'Halloran. O'Halloran struck out seven batters while scattering seven hits and one run. He has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts.
• Following Friday's game, Michigan got the bats going on Saturday and Sunday. Clark Elliott reached base in all five plate appearances with two hits and three walks on Saturday, while Tito Flores reached base in all five plate appearances on Sunday with three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Flores also connected for a three-run, sixth-inning home run that gave U-M its first lead of the game.
• Right-hander Noah Rennard provided outstanding relief for the Wolverines over the weekend, striking out seven batters in 3.0 innings on Saturday for a three-inning save while earning the win in 1.1 innings with a strikeout on Sunday.
Scouting Notre Dame
• Notre Dame enters play this week with a 20-5 record and a top-10 national ranking. The Irish have won eight straight games following a rough stretch that saw them get swept by Louisville and lose to Virginia Tech before the remainder of the series with the Hokies was cancelled due to cold weather in South Bend.
• The Irish are led offensively by Carter Putz (.379 avg., 5 HR, 27 RBI), David LaManna (.347 avg.), Ryan Cole (.306 avg., 4 HR, 15 RBI, 10-10 SB), and Brooks Coetzee (.277 avg., 7 HR, 22 RBI).
Scouting Michigan State
• The Spartans enter the week at 13-15 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play after dropping two of three games against Ohio State last weekend. After playing a doubleheader on Sunday, the Spartans have canceled a Tuesday game against Eastern Michigan and are set to play Western Michigan on Wednesday.
• The Spartans are led by Trent Farquhar (.330 avg., 9 2B, 13 RBI), Jack Frank (.317 avg., 15 XBH, 19 RBI), and Mitch Jebb (.315, 11 EBH, 23 RBI, 10-15 SB).
• MSU has used a variety of starters in its pitching rotation. Harrison Cook (0-3, 10.08 ERA, 41 H, 27.2 IP), Nick Powers (2-3, 4.89 ERA, 46 H, 38.2 IP), and Conner Tomasic (2-0, 5.17 ERA, 28 H, 31.1 IP) got starts last weekend against the Buckeyes. Andrew Crason (2-0, 6.06 ERA, 19 K, 16.1 IP) leads the team with 12 appearances, while Kyle Bischoff (1-1, 6 SV, 0.61 ERA, 16 H, 14.2 IP, 18 K) has solidified himself as the team's closer through 11 appearances.
