
Michigan Readies for Weekend Matches

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (12-5, 6-1 B1G) gears up for a split weekend, hosting Nebraska (12-8, 5-3 B1G) on Friday (April 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center at 3 p.m. before heading to Iowa (5-14, 1-7 B1G) for a Sunday (April 17) match at 11 a.m. CT.
Wolverine Bites
• No. 22-ranked Michigan is back at the Varsity Tennis Center for the first time in nearly four weeks, hosting Nebraska on Friday afternoon (April 15) before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday (April 17) at Iowa. Michigan is 7-2 at the VTC this season, including a 2-0 record in Big Ten play.
• At 6-1 in conference play, Michigan is one of two Big Ten teams with just one loss, as Northwestern enters the weekend with a 7-1 record. U-M and NU will face off next weekend (April 24) in the regular-season finale at the VTC.
• U-M is in at No. 22 this week in the ITA rankings for the second straight week after getting a 4-0 win at Michigan State (April 9). The Huskers are in at No. 52, with the Hawkeyes not in the top 75.
• Michigan is back at the VTC for the first time in nearly four weeks to host Nebraska. U-M played five straight on the road, going 4-1 during the stretch. The Wolverines finish the regular season with three of their final four matches at home.
• The Wolverines are facing Nebraska and Iowa for the first time since the 2018-19 season. U-M recorded 7-0 shutouts against both opponents on back-to-back days at the VTC. It will be Michigan's first trip to Iowa since a 6-1 win on March 16, 2018.
• Head coach Ronni Bernstein made a change in the doubles lineup for Michigan's match at Michigan State (April 9) that paid off as U-M won the doubles point. She put two new teams together in Kari Miller and Andrea Cerdan playing at No. 2, with Nicole Hammond and Merri Kelly paired at No. 3. Both teams won their matches, giving Michigan the 1-0 lead. Julia Fliegner and Jaedan Brown teamed up at No. 1, the first time they played together since going 2-1 at the ASU Thunderbird (Nov. 5-7).
• U-M now has four players in the 20-win club in Julia Fliegner (24), Jaedan Brown (23), Kari Miller (22) and Nicole Hammond (21). With limited seasons the last several years, it is the first 20-win season for each of them and the first 20-win season by any Wolverine since the 2018-19 campaign.
• Michigan has three ranked singles players in the latest ITA rankings in No. 15 Kari Miller, No. 75 Jaedan Brown and No. 121 Nicole Hammond.
• Kari Miller has anchored Michigan at the top of the lineup, going 11-2 at No. 1 in dual matches. With a three-set win over No. 26 Isabelle Boulais of Ohio State (April 1), Miller now has seven singles wins against ranked opponents in dual-match play. She has been named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week twice this season.
• Nebraska (12-8, 5-3 B1G) is coming off a 2-0 weekend with a pair of 4-0 wins at Rutgers and Maryland. U-M is 9-0 all-time against the Huskers.
• Iowa (5-14, 1-7 B1G) picked up its first conference win last time out, getting a 4-1 victory at Rutgers (April 10). The Hawkeyes will play at Michigan State prior to hosting U-M. The Wolverines are 40-11 all-time against Iowa, winning the last 18 matches in the series.
• U-M is 143-8 (.947) in Big Ten regular-season play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to nine of the last 11 Big Ten championship titles awarded (no title awarded in 2020), as well as three tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• Michigan head coach Ronni Bernstein, who is in her 15th season in Ann Arbor, became Michigan's all-time winningest coach earlier this season. Bernstein is up to 297 victories at Michigan following a 1-0 weekend. In addition, Bernstein can become the first coach to win 300 matches at Michigan with three more wins this season.
• After this weekend, Michigan closes out the regular season at home with matches against Illinois (April 22) and Northwestern (April 24).
