WALNUT, Calif. -- With a school-record win and three additional top-eight finishes, the field event athletes for the University of Michigan women's track and field team carried the banner for the Wolverines Friday (April 15) on the second day at the Mt. SAC Relays, with three additional top-eight finishes on the track.
With a single successful attempt at 4.25m (13-11.75), Brooke Tjerrild joined teammate Jessica Mercier and volunteer assistant coach Kiley (Tobel) Bastien as co-school record holders in the outdoor pole vault.
After Tjerrild was one of just four women in the 16-deep field to make the aggressive opening height of 4.10m (13-5.25) on her second attempt, she made the next bar on her first attempt to set herself up for the win. Another woman also cleared on her first try, with the tie broken by virtue of Tjerrild needing two attempts to make the opening height and her opponent needing all three.
Though all three women have not yet fired on the same cylinders so far this outdoor season, Tjerrild and teammates Mercier and Mia Manson have all cleared at least 4.25m this year. Manson went one centimeter higher during the indoor season, and Mercier went 4.36m (14-3.5) to set the indoor record in February. Those two both no-heighted on Friday.
Both Tjerrild and Manson are in strong position at this point to make the NCAA East Preliminaries, which are reserved for the top 48 individuals per event in the East Region. The meet serves as the opening rounds of the national championships.
Corinne Jemison took fourth in the discus throw final, heaving a career-best 54.06m (177-4). The performance moved her to No. 5 in school history in the event with the longest throw by a Michigan woman in nearly 10 years. She joins Melissa Bickett as the only women ranked top-five in school history in both the shot put and discus.
Ameia Wilson put together one of the best long jump series in school history, topping out at 6.31m (20-8.5) (+0.9m/s) for seventh place overall. She leapt that mark on her first attempt, and followed up with four other jumps farther than 20 feet, including a 6.29m (20-7.75) (+0.4m/s) on her penultimate attempt.
Wilson also paired with Hanna Hearn, Hannah Waller and BreeAna Bates to run 45.43 for fifth place in the women's 4x100 relay.
Riley Ammenhauser continued a strong debut outdoor campaign with a seventh-place finish in 12.58m (+2.0m/s) on her final attempt to move up from ninth.
Michigan was also strong on the track, particularly at the 400-meter distance, with and without hurdles.
Three-time Big Ten champion and All-American Ziyah Holman clocked 52.28 for eighth place in her signature 400-meter distance. The performance was her fastest 400 of the 2022 season so far, indoors or outdoors, and puts her in strong position
Her 4x400 relay teammate, Savannah Sutherland, obliterated the U-M first-year record in the 400-meter hurdles with a 58.05 for eighth place overall. The record had stood at 59.45 by Katie LaValley since 2006, and Sutherland moved all the way up to No. 3 in school history. The performance also firmly moves her to qualifying position for the NCAA East Prelims.
Late in the evening, Michigan got another top finish on the track as Kayla Windemuller ran a career-best 16:01.59 for fourth place in the collegiate section of the 5,000 meters. The time moved her to No. 8 in school history, and would likely advance her to the NCAA East Prelims.
The final day at Mt. SAC begins Saturday starting at 4 p.m. PT., preceded by the beginning of the Louisville Invitational at 2 p.m.
